The prosecution in the Bill Cosby trial has rested its case

Mr. Cosby arrived at the courthouse Monday holding his spokesman's arm for support as he walked past dozens of cameras.

People yelled, "We love you Bill Cosby, " and "Hey, hey, hey, " the catchphrase from Cosby's "Fat Albert" TV show. He then waved from the back of an SUV.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele displayed Cosby's words on a large projection screen Friday during the fifth day of Cosby's trial, at which he's charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault in connection with his alleged contact with Andrea Constand, a former Temple University athletic department employee, after plying her with blue pills and wine at his New Second Street home sometime between mid-January and mid-February 2004. He has said it was consensual.

Constand testified this week she rejected Cosby's advances and would have fought him off again had the pills not left her paralyzed and semi-conscious.

Prosecutors evidently saved the quaalude testimony until the end for maximum effect. Earlier in the trial, Constand's mother testified that she wasn't looking for money from the entertainer. If convicted, Cosby could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Cosby's sworn 2005 testimony was part of Constand's civil suit against him then, which was settled for an undisclosed sum and the deposition sealed.

The deposition's unsealing in 2015 by a federal judge prompted prosecutors to reopen the case and bring charges later that year.

"Quaaludes happen to be the drug that kids, young people were using to party with and there were times when I wanted to have them just in case", Cosby said.

One moment in that decade-old testimony elicited a chuckle from jurors and a rare courtroom smile from the defendant - a question and answer about the now-deceased doctor who wrote the Quaaludes prescription, knowing full well Cosby didn't intend to take the pills himself.

"I didn't want to talk about what did you give her".

According to the deposition, Cosby admitted to giving Quaaludes to multiple women before sex.

Meanwhile, in the phone conversation with Gianna Constand, Cosby separately suggested setting up an educational trust for her daughter, who had expressed an interest in graduate school. Constand refused the offer and reported Cosby to police, suing him after prosecutors failed to file charges. She testified it can take years for victims to work out their feelings about what happened to them and accept the scrutiny of coming forward.

Defense lawyers began grilling Ms. Constand on the stand late Tuesday about several discrepancies in her initial account to police in 2005.

"I don't think an expert should ever, especially in this case, comment on the credibility of victims", Valliere testified when asked if such an approach was appropriate.

"When you have to deal with examination, cross-examination, etcetera, etcetera, more than two sides to every story, sometimes it's four or five", Cosby explained.

"Whatever the content of the article is, it is not relevant to this case", Judge Steven O'Neill told Cosby's lawyers, declining efforts to show the article in full to the jury.

In a barrage that all but destroyed Cosby's good-guy reputation, some 60 women have come forward to say he sexually violated them, but the statute of limitations for prosecution had run out in almost every case.
