The trial of officer Jeronimo Yanez

Closing arguments are set to begin on Monday in the trial of a Minnesota police officer charged with fatally shooting a black motorist during a traffic stop past year, the aftermath of which was streamed on social media by the driver's girlfriend.

St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, 29, has been charged with one count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of risky discharge of a firearm. Yanez shot Castile five times last July during a traffic stop in a St. Paul suburb, just seconds after Castile informed him he was carrying a gun. Prosecutors highlighted the dashcam video's recording of statements Yanez gave a supervisor soon after the shooting, saying variously he didn't know where Castile's gun was and that he told him to take his hand off it. Yanez testified that he meant only that he didn't see the gun at first. Yanez fired seven rounds into Castile's vehicle; Castile was struck by five of the rounds, two of which tore through his heart.

A Facebook live video captured the moment Yanez pointed his gun through the window of Castile's Oldsmobile.

For the two counts of unsafe discharge of a firearm, jurors will need to decide whether the officer discharged his firearm under circumstances that endangered Reynolds and her daughter, Dae-Anna.

Jurors returned to court briefly Tuesday morning to re-watch two key videos in the case. And he said Yanez was afraid for his life.

There's just too much doubt to whether or not Yanez saw Castile's gun, Paulsen told the jury.

The defense attorney also refuted the inconsistencies in Yanez's statements using the word "it" instead of "gun".

The Ramsey County judge hearing the case hasn't said in open court how long each side will get for closing arguments.

Castile responded, "I was reaching", but before he finished, Yanez, with right hand on his holster, said, "Don't pull it out". Yanez exited his auto and told Castile his brake light was broken. He faces up to 10 years in prison on the manslaughter charge.

Prosecutors earlier argued Yenez never saw Castile with a gun, and had plenty of options that did not involve shooting Castile.

The finger was injured during the incident and Paulsen explained to jurors that the photo is additional evidence that Castile's trigger finger could have not been in his pocket or on the gun when he was shot. He also alluded to testimony from defense witnesses who portrayed Yanez as a good and honest man. While it captures what was said between the two men and shows Yanez firing into the vehicle, it does not show what happened inside the auto or what Yanez might have seen.

During the trial, Reynolds said she and Castile had used marijuana, and a subsequent autopsy found traces of the drug in his blood.

"I'm not pulling it out", Castile said, in the audio of the police tape.

A 15-member jury was pared to 12 after closing arguments wrapped up and three alternates were dismissed.

The jury deliberating the fate of a Minnesota police officer charged in the fatal shooting of a black motorist has watched replays of two key videos in the case.

After Castile was stopped, Yanez asked him to present his driver's license and insurance card. The rest are white, and no jurors are Latino.
