Theresa May plays down risk of clash with Russian forces in Syria

The defence ministry also condemned the downing of the jet and said that the act was a violation of global law.

Moscow also declared it would suspend the use of a military hotline meant to avoid conflicts between the USA and Russian military campaigns in Syria.

The latest development from the more than six-year-long civil war in Syria is sure to escalate global tensions even more, just as the Islamic State has begun losing ground in the so-called caliphate.

Updated at 8:51 a.m.

Russian Federation says it will now treat all USA -led coalition planes in the air over Syria, west of the Euphrates, as targets after an American fighter jet for the first time in the six-year conflict shot down a Syrian military plane.

USA -led air support then hit the Syrian pro-government forces with a "show of force", officials said.

The Russian defense ministry says in a statement that, starting Monday, it will track all jets and drones of the USA -led coalition west of the Euphrates and treat them as targets.

And it has demanded a full account of why the U.S. military shot down a Syrian SU-22 on Sunday.

The downing of the jet and Russia's response came as the US-led coalition and allied fighters battle to oust Daesh from its Syrian bastion Raqqa.

London fire: Bishop describes residents' angry meeting with May
He said it had been "incredibly emotional working in there". "I went to help and we were helpless", he told The Observer . She said after the meeting that there have been "huge frustrations" in the community as people tried to get information.

The US Central Command said, however, that the Syrian plane bombed US-backed forces and the action against it was "in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defence of coalition partnered forces".

US aircraft were being repositioned Monday after concerns about the contested battle space, said Col. Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the Baghdad-based Operation Inherent Resolve. The pilot of the Syrian Air Force self-ejected over the area controlled by ISIS, and his fate is unknown, the ministry said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said USA attacks against Syrian forces were considered "military aggression". He said government forces began attacking the SDF on Saturday, using warplanes, artillery and tanks in areas that SDF had liberated from ISIS.

On Sunday, a spokesperson for the US-led coalition told ARA News: "The Coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat".

Earlier this month, the coalition fired on pro-regime ground forces who approached the garrison and shot down a pro-regime armed drone.

The Dutch government is sending a military refueling plane to Kuwait to assist the US -led coalition carrying out airstrikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

The downing of the Syrian jet is the latest escalation between the USA -led coalition and pro-regime forces in the country.

It also raised questions about how U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which had previously put Iran "on notice" for its ballistic missile tests, will respond. U.S President Donald Trump turned down Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan's suggestion of desisting from partnering with the YPG during their meeting on May 21, and now Syrians and Russians are also wary that the advance of the SDF (or the YPG), with the backing of US forces, may have ulterior motives apart from just liberating Raqqa.
