Thomas Makes History, Harman Leads Open

Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day may not have made it to the weekend in Erin, Wisconsin, but don't think for a minute that the U.S. Open has lost all of its luster.

And yet, Thomas won't even walk to the first tee box Sunday with the lead.

This isn't like most Opens.

Thomas had earlier carved out a slice of US Open history with a sensational nine under par 63. It led to an eagle to close out his 63.

World No.9 Rickie Fowler, who held the halfway lead, earned solo fifth with a 68, with Players Championship victor Si Woo Kim a shot back alone in sixth after also carding a 68.

Fowler was among those who wouldn't mind seeing the conditions toughen up for the final 18 holes. "So to be able to do so and have a chance tomorrow is just going to be great".

It was the 30th time a player has shot 63 in the Majors - both Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson posted that score during their classic battle in last year's Open at Troon. And he wasn't through.

Thomas set the tone for his record-setting round when he holed a spectacular birdie putt on the fifth hole.

But it all went wrong at the par four third, when he got snarled up in the knee-deep fescue and ran up an ugly seven.

Morgan shot 77 and, remarkably, still had the lead at 4-under 212. Tom Kite won his only major. Going into the final round, 42 players were still under par. Fowler is within two strokes of the lead at minus-10. No one had a chance.

He finished at 12-under 272, the first player to complete a U.S. Open double digits under par. He was 10 under, only two shots behind. That's significantly higher than the $1.8 million that Johnson earned for winning the 2016 U.S. Open. Furyk closed with a 72.

He dropped another shot at the fourth, and despite showing his battling qualities with a birdie at the eight, another bogey at ten kept him down among the also-rans. The soft Black Course allowed players to take dead aim, and Barnes opened with rounds of 67 and 65. Fleetwood was poised to take the lead until his pitch to the 18th wasn't strong enough and his next shot went beyond the flag and down the slope some 70 feet away.

By the end of the day, that wasn't even the most shocking number. He didn't win, either, closing with a 76 to finish at 2-under 278, two behind Lucas Glover.

The first prize amount is the only figure that has officially been announced by the United States Golf Association, but with a 20 percent increase in the total purse as well as the champion's share, here are the projections for the U.S. Open finish as well as the estimates on the top-10 payouts. A mere hiccup. On Saturday, he got to 14 under, then on Sunday, he widened the gap versus par to 16 under. He also could become the first left-hander to win a U.S. Open. A lot of them had to come from far back going into the weekend, and it was hard to put together two good rounds. The tournament was never really in doubt after that, though the wind arrived and Kaymer couldn't maintain the pace.

Rickie Fowler, on the verge of being left behind, rallied with three straight birdies and shot 68. He shot 72 in the third round for an 8-under 202.

Brooks Koepka looked like he might be the man to lead the way on nine under, but two bogeys on the back nine meant he was at 7 under and still very much in the hunt.
