Timea Bacsinszky and Jelena Ostapenko to contest French Open semi-final

Eleventh seed Wozniacki's wait for a first grand slam continues on after she was dumped out six hours after the quarter-final started as poor weather led to one lengthy delay at the end of the second set and another soon after the players had resumed.

It will come as a real blow to former world No 1 Wozniacki, who was chasing a first Grand Slam title and started strongly in a game that was scheduled to start at 1pm local time but didn't finish until close to 8pm due to a postponed start and regular rain breaks.

Bacsinszky, who also made the last four in 2015, will face unseeded Ostapenko who stunned Danish 11th seed Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 for a place in Saturday's final.

- Swiss Timea Bacsinszky reached her second Roland Garros semi-final with 6-4 6-4 victory over home favourite Kristina Mladenovic.

French hopes now rest with Caroline Garcia, who faces world number three Karolina Pliskova today, while Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine plays Romania number three seed Simona Halep.

The world No. 47 charged back in set No. 2 but saw her momentum disrupted by a three-hour rain delay.

Both Ostapenko and Bacsinszky, the 30th seed, will celebrate their birthdays when they meet on Thursday (June 8).

- Ostapenko when asked if her ballroom dancing competitions as a youngster helped prepare her for the big stage in tennis.

"But then he still played very well many times here at the French because he's, as well, a clay-court player".

On a wet, windy, unseasonably cold day in Paris, rain forced the first two men's quarterfinals to be pushed back to Wednesday.

Pierce, who is a WTA Finals ambassador, said: "Bacsinszky is older and more experienced but Ostapenko will likely be the one who comes out with a lot of energy".

The Latvian is the first teenager to reach the French Open semi-finals since 2007 when Serbia's Ana Ivanovic pulled off the feat.

The young Latvian was already a semi-finalist in Prague and runner-up in Charleston, and here she had beaten Sam Stosur to reach her first Major quarters.

Teenager Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the semifinals of the French Open by rallying past former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

There were no surprises as the final fourth-round matches in the men's singles of the French Open were completed on Monday. It will be really great to play here when it will be my birthday.

"And I'm going to get another chance in a few weeks at Wimbledon and I'm going to try to take advantage of that". "I'm just happy with the way I celebrated my birthday", Ostapenko said.

Dragging her opponent forward with a slice forehand, Bacsinszky closed when Mladenovic botched a high forehand volley. "I think maybe this [birthday] is one of the best ones - because to play semifinal of Roland Garros on your birthday, I think it's really nice".
