Top three miss US Open cut, leaving four-way tie for the lead

The U.S. Open didn't seem to faze him, and he delivered a variety of big shots that led to his sensational finish.

Matsuyama, who had struggled in the opening round with a two-over-par 74, produced an electrifying second round seven-under-par 65 to thrust himself firmly into contention.

World No.1 and defending US Open champion Dustin Johnson overcame controversy on his way to victory a year ago, but two over-par rounds mean he has no chance of keeping his hands on the trophy for a second time.

Casey and other early starters were greeted by more challenging conditions than those they faced in the opening round as winds picked up and greens firmed around the links-style layout, making the longest course in U.S. Open history play even longer. More important, he was happy with how he played Friday and remained optimistic that he could carry that over to the weekend. Many were headed to the airport.

Rory McIlroy finished his second round with a string of birdies, however, the world number two also missed the cut.

The 26-year-old will play in the second-to-last group Sunday, quite a change for a player who had played in seven previous majors and missed the cut in six.

The cut for the top 60 and ties was at 1-over 145, tying a U.S. Open record low set in 1990 at Medinah.

Jason Day followed up a 79 in the first round with a 75 in round two, Rory McIlroy was always up against it after a 78 on Thursday and although he shot one under on Friday he was well short of the cut.

The U.S. Open was only his sixth start this year.

"I couldn't have shot any higher", Johnson said.

It was all part of a dizzying day at the US Open where at times the leaderboard resembled a game of musical chairs with names moving up and down.

Neither did McIroy and Day, though all three made their share of trips into the club-grabbing fescue as well.

"(On Thursday), coming off an injury, I was a little anxious going out there. That should have affected everyone the same way, but it was particularly troublesome for the field's elite players.

World number two McIlroy meanwhile - who earlier in the week had advised players unable to hit the fairways to "pack their bags" - was left at five-over-par after a second round 71.

The top three golfers in the world, and six of the top 10, didn't make it.

Sixty-eight players made the cut, with former champion Webb Simpson, former Masters and British Open victor Zach Johnson and former PGA champion Keegan Bradley all making it on the number.

Joining them with a weekend off were 2016 British Open champion Henrik Stenson, Alex Noren, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose and Adam Scott.

Among them all you won't find one victor of a major and only Fowler with star power.

It was the second consecutive USA event the Briton has withdrawn from having pulled out of last month's Players Championship in the second round.

Were they just not as sharp as they normally would be for a major?

Matsuyama is playing in his fifth U.S. Open. "Some of it nearly takes the bombers out of it".

Not that anyone is complaining about the course.

"If you look at the golf course and you even talk to me, Jason or Rory, this course sets up ideal for us".

"The fairways are wide enough", Koepka said, citing only a few holes where driver will stay in the bag.
