Trump considering firing Mueller as special counsel on Russian Federation probe

"I think it is a consideration the President has had, because (Robert) Mueller is illegitimate as special counsel", Ruddy told CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day" Tuesday.

The Washington Post reported late Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller is seeking interviews with three Trump administration officials who weren't involved in Trump's campaign. Ruddy never spoke to the president regarding this issue.

In 1973, amid the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

Mueller was appointed special counsel after Trump fired former FBI director James Comey, who was heading up the investigation.

Mueller is known to be close friends with former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, whose credibility he would have to weigh against the president's if Mueller made a decision to probe whether Trump committed obstruction of justice by expressing the hope that Comey would be lenient with former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

'Yeah, all I've heard so much are rumors, ' Ryan said during his Capitol Hill presser Tuesday morning.

As attorney general, Sessions is unlikely to answer in detail questions about conversations he's had with Trump.

Conservative media, led by Newsmax CEO and Trump friend Chris Ruddy, have suggested that the interview shows Mueller has a conflict in his special counsel investigation. If Trump were to make such a move, he would have to order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

This is true for reasons similar to those that prompted Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the same investigation.

There had been speculations in Washington that the President wants to terminate Mueller as special counsel.

They say Trump did not collude with Russian Federation and see the investigation as a politically motivated sham that handicaps Trump's ability to execute his agenda, according to one person who is advising the White House on how to handle the investigation.

Nonetheless, Ruddy said firing Mueller would be "a very significant mistake".

Ryan argued Mueller must be allowed to carry on his investigation "because of what [Trump] did with Comey", referring to the president's decision to fire the former FBI director over the Russian Federation investigation.

"Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

On Sunday, Trump's attorney Jay Sekulow kept the door ajar for a Mueller firing, telling ABC News" George Stephanopoulos the president "is a unitary executive'.
