Trump dodges tapes question, denies seeking Comey loyalty

President Donald Trump speaks to a Faith and Freedom conference at the Omni Shoreham Hotel Thursday

"But we want to get back to running our great country".

One of the "lies" Mr Trump says Mr Comey told was that he had "pressured him" into dropping an investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn. There would be "nothing wrong if I did say" something regarding Flynn, Trump said "according to everybody I read today".

This is pernicious - and unsafe.

Did Trump or his associates receive Russia's help in advancing their business interests?

"I was sacked in some way to change, or the endeavour was to change, the way the Russian Federation investigation was being conducted". But with respect to obstruction of justice, Comey's testimony - when juxtaposed with Trump's known conduct - suggests that the president systematically attempted to deny us answers. If Trump hadn't violated all good sense and asked for a private session with Comey to ask (allegedly) for loyalty and for him to drop the Flynn investigation, Comey would have had little to testify about, given that he can't talk about the Russian Federation investigation. Trump told no one.

Brianna Keilar said, more seriously, this does raise the question of whether Trump will be able to recall what he said when presented with an account written by Comey right afterwards. Karl asked, referring to Comey. After complaining about "the killer networks that treat me so badly as fake news", Trump called on Jonathan Karl of ABC. It wasn't insane for Trump to wonder why, with so much blabbing, Comey couldn't simply let this be known? The opposite occurred, as the firing created a political firestorm that has stalled Trump's legislative agenda and taken over Washington.

The question of whether there are tapes of his conversations with Comey has also dogged Trump. When Sessions lingered, Trump asked him to leave. He did say, under oath, that you told him to let the Flynn - you said you hoped the Flynn investigation, you could let - he could let go. When Comey later requested that Sessions prevent any further such communications, Sessions did not respond.

Trump said the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's exchange with lawmakers during Thursday's hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee showed there was "no collusion, no obstruction".

In his first congressional appearance since being abruptly fired by Trump last month, Comey on Thursday detailed months of distrust of the president and bluntly asserted that Trump had fired him to interfere with the probe of Russia's ties to the Trump campaign.

Tapes could resolve the dispute, but Trump against refused to say whether they exist, telling reporters he would do so "maybe sometime in the very near future".

James Comey thinks Donald Trump is a blatant liar.

On May 9, Trump summarily fired Comey. Franken, " Leahy said following Comey's Thursday Senate testimony.

It swiftly emerged that Trump had solicited Rosenstein's memo as a pretext.

Trump wouldn't answer, saying only that he would address any possible tapes "over a fairly short period of time" and "you're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry". Trump asked-and he also came prepared.

He then dove into the heart of the fraught political controversy around his firing and whether President Trump interfered in the bureau's Russian Federation investigation, as he elaborated on written testimony released a day earlier. This is contrary to reason, the bulk of case law, and any fair interpretation of a statute governing anyone who "influences, obstructs, or impedes, or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede the due administration of justice".
