Trump lawyer contradicts president on obstruction investigation

The President Is Not Under Investigation Trump Attorney

US President Donald Trump is not under any investigation for obstruction of justice in a probe into his possible collusion with Russian Federation, his attorney says.

One of Donald Trump s lawyers insisted Sunday that the president was not under criminal investigation as part of the sweeping probe into Russian Federation s alleged meddling in American elections, despite the United States leader s tweets angrily calling the whole saga a "distraction".

The Post reported last week that Robert Mueller - the special counsel appointed to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election - was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.

Trump at first attributed Comey's firing to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for his handling of an investigation previous year into the use of a private email server by Trump's defeated challenger, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Jay Sekulow, a lawyer who is part of a team hired by Mr Trump to deal with allegations of collusion by his campaign with Moscow, appeared on Sunday to contradict Mr Trump's statement on Twitter on Friday that he was being investigated for firing his Federal Bureau of Investigation director last month.

Barak Cohen, a former Justice Department lawyer and now a defence attorney specialising in white-collar crime and investigations, said there was no requirement that the special counsel notify Trump he was under investigation, so the lack of such notice meant nothing.

From a newsworthiness point of view, the most important part was Sekulow seemingly admitting that Trump is under investigation.

However, also Sunday, Trump's personal lawyer, Jay Sekulow said there was no investigation of Trump and the president's tweet was only referring to the Post story. He repeatedly insisted the president is not being investigated and Friday's tweet was meant to paraphrase media accounts.

The future of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein seemed in doubt Friday when Trump appeared to attack him in the tweet.

Richard Painter (Republican), a University of Minnesota law professor who served as an ethics adviser for President George W. Bush said of Trump, "if administration officials can't deliver some satisfying answers soon [to Trump-Russia scandals], this is definitely grounds for impeachment".

First we had collusion allegations, then obstruction allegations and now reportedly financial crimes allegedly committed by multiple individuals, including Jared Kushner.

Trump is under pressure to reveal whether he has any tape recordings of private conversations with Comey.

Trump returned to the White House on Sunday after spending Father s Day weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat.

"They want to lay the foundation to discredit whatever Bob Mueller comes up with", Schiff said.

The panel sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday.

In Twitter comments Sunday, Trump said, "The MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt".

A source familiar with the matter told CNN's Evan Perez that investigators for Mueller would speak with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers. The president's response was as it related to "The Washington Post" report. Schiff spoke on ABC's "This Week " and King spoke on NBC.
