Trump likely to withdraw from Paris climate deal

This comes after Trump, who promised to pull the U.S. out of the deal during his presidential campaign, tweeted that he would be "announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days", adding: "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" He said that now 147 parties representing more than 82 percent of greenhouse gas emissions have ratified the Paris agreement.

Trump announced over the weekend that he would reveal his decision on the Paris agreement this week.

Though a formal announcement is expected this week, two senior USA officials familiar with Trump's plans told CNN the decision could change before Trump makes a public announcement.

On Tuesday, Modi said in Berlin that it would be a "crime" to spoil the environment for future generations as the world awaits a decision on US climate policy. It was negotiated by 195 countries at a conference in 2015.

The statement follows speculation that President Donald Trump may soon announce US withdrawal from the Paris global agreement of 2015 to reduce climate-warming carbon emissions. The pact sets a target of holding the global average rise in temperature below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and preferably below 1.5 degrees Celsius. All countries will be required to take some action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, regardless of economic development, by 2020.

The agreement also established a $100 billion fund to help vulnerable countries deal with the effects of climate change.

China signed the agreement.

Trump famously, and controversially, somehow doesn't believe that climate change is real.

For all its symbolic importance, the decision may have little practical effect on USA carbon emissions. "Withdrawing from the agreement will limit our access to them and could expose us to retaliatory measures".

In a recent full page ad which ran in the New York Times and other major newspapers, Adobe, Apple, Google, Morgan Stanley, Salesforce, Microsoft, PG&E and numerous others beseeched President Trump not to withdraw from the agreement.

The only two countries not now supporting the deal are Nicaragua and Syria.

While some coal interests and generators are opposed to the Paris accord, most energy companies are pushing Trump to stay in the deal.

Environmental advocates and scientists are of course alarmed that the USA would take such a combative position regarding climate change. As president, he has taken significant steps to roll back Mr. Obama's climate change agenda. But since he won the White House, the decision whether to fulfill that promise has been among the most fraught within his administration, dividing the Trump family and top aides along ideological and nationalistic lines.
