Trump Not Under Investigation In Russia Probe, Says Lawyer

Multiple reports surfaced last week, claiming that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election has expanded to include claims that Trump obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey (pictured below).

Again, Sekulow left out some key points, which Wallace and others were only too happy to raise: Trump later told NBC's Lester Holt that he had already made up his mind to fire Comey regardless of the recommendation from Sessions and that he was firing him because he was unhappy with the Russian Federation investigation.

"This was his response, via Twitter, via social media, in response to the Washington Post piece with five anonymous sources", Sekulow added.

"Let me be clear here", said the Trump's legal team member.

I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer said on Sunday that Trump is not under investigation in the probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential race, adding that the president has not received any notification that he is being investigated. "So that - nothing has changed in that regard since James Comey's testimony".

But Jay Sekulow, part of Trump's legal team, said the president was writing about reports of an investigation, not an actual probe. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has expansive powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation. The message apparently referred to Rosenstein, whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated. Specifically, how can the president be accused of wrongdoing when he fired the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who serves at his pleasure, after receiving a recommendation that he do so from the attorney general, backed up by a memo critical of Comey written by the deputy attorney general?

The president has denied that he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation and has also disputed that he's attempted to block the investigation into his campaign's possible role in Russia's election-related hacking. The California congressman said that the president and his associates are engaged in a scorched earth litigation strategy that begins with discrediting Mueller.

Sekulow said Trump "is not and has not been under investigation". "I can not read the mind of the special prosecutor", Sekulow said. "I believe this is the thing that could happen for the president".

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, editor-in-chief Ben Smith asked Wittes why he chose to begin sharing details of his private conversations with Comey with the media.

The lawyer also suggested Twitter's character limit may be partly to blame.

The panel sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday. But a new report from independent journalist Louise Mensch claimed that the memo was actually the idea of Jeff Sessions, who also ordered Rosenstein to write a separate memo backing Comey. "That is an investigation into his potential obstruction of justice, in addition to a number of other issues related to the Russian Federation matter".

"That signifies this president knew all too well that it was inappropriate", Schiff said.

The Senate intelligence committee is in the early stages of its probe and is looking at whether anyone involved in the campaign shared information with the Russians, said Senator Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

"Bob Mueller's investigation is only getting started", said Schiff.

"This is a very complex matter, involving thousands of pages of intelligence documents, lots of witnesses".

While aides have advised Trump to stay off Twitter, the president continued to weigh in Sunday as he spent the weekend at Camp David, the government-owned presidential retreat in Maryland.

"Witch Hunt", he said in a tweet.

Also on Sunday's "Meet The Press", Sen. Rubio spoke on NBC, CNN and CBS.

For example, former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich accused Mueller of hiring Democratic political donors and called Mueller the "tip of the deep state spear", a conspiracy theory reference.
