Trump says China NKorea pressure hasn't worked

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office received the body of the 22-year-old college student, who died less than a week after his return to the US after almost a year and a half in North Korean detention, a spokesman said Tuesday.

He said he spoke with Warmbier's parents, adding it's "incredible what they've gone through" and that the student "should have been brought home a long time ago".

"If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would absolutely, I would be honored to do it", Trump said in an interview.

But other analysts said that however horrific the case might be, the Trump administration was unlikely to let it upset the momentum toward dialogue it has built. Obama's office had no reaction, but his former aides have said he worked tirelessly to try to get Warmbier and other Americans released from North Korea. "North Korea's isolation posed unique challenges, but we worked through every avenue available to us - including through the Swedish, our protecting power, as well as through our representatives in NY - to secure the release of Mr. Warmbier".

The family's public statements indicate that they feel the previous administration could have and should have done more for their son, who chose to visit North Korea despite warnings from the Department of State instructing American citizens to avoid travel to North Korea.

North Korea must bear "heavy responsibility" for Warmbier's death, said South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Hamilton County 's Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco's office released a statement saying Otto Warmbier's family objected to an autopsy so only an external exam of his body was done.

"The terrible torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible", the family said in a statement after Warmbier's death.

Doctors last week said Warmbier had suffered severe neurological injuries, for which tests did not conclusively reveal the cause. "In the final year of his life, he lived the nightmare in which the North Korean people have been trapped for 70 years: forced labor, mass starvation, systematic cruelty, torture, and murder".

Warmbier, a onetime high school football player and homecoming king, was travelling in Beijing in December 2015 when he signed up for a five-day tour of North Korea with a Chinese company that advertised "budget travel to destinations your mother would rather you stayed away from". North Korean officials said he became comatose after he was given a sleeping pill following a botulism diagnosis. "It's a brutal regime and we'll be able to handle it".

The United States has designated Iran, Sudan and Syria as state sponsors of terrorism. "As I said already, he (Ojea-Quintana) is the model servant of the hostile forces", Han said, making clear he was referring to the United States and its allies who conduct joint military exercises regularly along the volatile border.

The Republican attacked North Korea hours after news of the 22-year-old's death broke.

"The United States once again condemns the brutality of the North Korean regime as we mourn its latest victim", Trump added.

"I think we should strongly consider it", Corker said. The company says the "tragic outcome" of Warmbier's trip - the American died after being jailed and had been in a coma - prompted the change.

Under their proposal, the Treasury Department would be ordered to prohibit all financial transactions related to travel to North Korea by Americans, unless specifically authorized by a USA license.

As NPR's Michele Kelemen reported last week, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said his agency is considering a travel visa restriction to North Korea; but that would stop short of a full travel ban, which would require action by Congress.
