Trump says he's under investigation, his lawyer says he isn't

Jay Sekulow, President Donald Trump's attorney, said that Trump is not under investigation and has received no notice of investigation from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer said on Sunday (June 18) that Trump is not under investigation in the probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential race, a statement that appeared to contradict a comment Trump himself made on Twitter last week.

He also claimed he is being investigated for firing FBI Director James Comey by "the man" who asked him to take that step. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has expansive powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation.

A lawyer for Mr Trump legal team later asserted the President is not under investigation, despite the the tweet. Significantly, the Washington Post claims that even before Mueller's appointment, the Justice Department had opened an investigation into Trump for possible obstruction of justice. The lawyer told CNN the Twitter comment was made in the confines of a 140-character post and suggested that the Post report should be discounted because of its use of anonymous sources. The source said investigators have sought information from Richard Ledgett, who recently retired as deputy NSA director and, the source said, had written a memo documenting an attempt from Trump urging Rogers to tamp down on the FBI's Russian Federation investigation. Testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee last Tuesday, Sessions said that while "it appears" that Russian officials sought to influence the USA electoral process, his knowledge of the matter was confined to "what I read in the paper".

The president also tweeted about a poll that gives him a 50% approval rating, adding that it is higher than his predecessor Barack Obama's.

He said Trump should "ask that it be thorough and completed expeditiously and be very cooperative with it".

"As he helped introduce Trump here Friday on a podium bearing the presidential seal, Rubio spoke in a volume and cadence reminiscent of the speeches he delivered as a candidate for president", the Post reported.

Schiff says if the panel can't get an answer then he believes a subpoena will be needed.

"There has been no notification from the special counsel's office that the president is under investigation".

The lawyer retorted that Wallace placed words in his mouth when he was crystal clear Trump is not and has not been under investigation.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday while spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat, Trump again referenced the "distraction of the Witch Hunt".

"That signifies this president knew all too well that it was inappropriate", Schiff said.

The Senate intelligence committee is in the early stages of its probe and is looking at whether anyone involved in the campaign shared information with the Russians, said Senator Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with Democrats.

"A lot of people have said, 'When do you think you'll be done?' Maybe the end of the year".

"The fact that [Trump] hasn't received a letter doesn't mean he's not the subject of an investigation", he said.

They went a few more rounds before Tapper wondered, "is that not frustrating for you as an attorney to have a client that is sharing information with the world that's not accurate?"
