Trump Transition Aides Ordered To Preserve Russia Documents

"In order to assist these investigations, the Presidential Transition Team and its current and former personnel have a responsibility to ensure that, to the extent potentially relevant documents exist, they are properly preserved", the memo stated.

Flynn, dismissed by Trump in February after it emerged he had misled Pence about conversations with the Russian ambassador, is a subject in investigations by intelligence committees in the House of Representatives and Senate, as well as the FBI.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe. The letter to campaign officials was signed by Michael Glassner, the Trump campaign's executive director, and sent to former campaign officials in an envelope from the Jones Day law firm, which the campaign retained to field inquiries from investigators, according to a copy of the letter obtained by CNN.

A Trump confidant said this week the president had considered firing Mueller. Rosenstein, the official who would be responsible for dismissing Mueller, told US lawmakers he would fire him only with good cause.

Moscow has denied any interference.

President Donald Trump's transition team has been ordered to preserve materials related to ongoing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, the New York Times reported today, as Trump again assailed the probes.

A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it. It follows Trump's decision to hire outside lawyers to represent him in the probes.

The president tweeted Friday, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!" he wrote in one post.

The memo also calls for the preservation of any records pertaining to background research on former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates, Trump's former foreign policy advisor Carter Page, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, who served as an informal adviser. Flynn was sacked for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of a call with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

All of those campaign advisers had been previously linked to FBI or congressional investigations of possible collusion with Russian Federation, but Gates had not. Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mueller.

The memo also orders transition team members to preserve any records of foreign travel by transition officials or Trump campaign officials. Pence has hired Richard Cullen, a lawyer known for defending government officials in high-profile investigations, his office said on Thursday.
