Trump tweet denounces Mueller obstruction of justice probe as witch hunt

Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit - including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich - have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.

Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller on May 17, testified on Tuesday that he would not fire the special counsel without "good cause".

In the backlash following Comey's dismissal, Rosenstein hired Robert Mueller to oversee the Russian Federation probe as special counsel.

President Donald Trump acknowledged for the first time Friday that he is under federal investigation as part of the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

Of those polled who are anxious that Mr. Trump has attempted to impede the Russian Federation investigation, the majority identify as Democrats or Independents- only a quarter of Republicans agree.

In his testimony on June 8, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he believed Trump had fired him over his role as lead of the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the US election and Trump campaign associates' possible ties to Russia.

U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence has hired outside legal counsel to oversee his response to investigations into possible collusion between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the investigators were looking into possible obstruction of justice.

The transition official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss post-election decisions publicly.

Apparently, this major uptick in the investigation into Flynn, efforts at Russian sabotage and White House collusion and now the obstruction-of-justice element by Trump himself came days after then-FBI Director Jim Comey was sacked by Trump.

While a sitting president is unlikely to face criminal prosecution, obstruction of justice could form the basis for impeachment. "Nice", Mr Trump wrote on Twitter earlier, later repeating his accusation the probe was a "witch hunt".

Examining such possible charges will allow investigators to interview key administration figures including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and possibly Trump himself, said the source familiar with the Mueller investigation.

The leaders of the Senate Intelligence committee said in a statement issued Wednesday that they "look forward to future engagements" with Robert Mueller. The White House has denied any collusion, and Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's legal team, denounced the Post report, saying on Wednesday: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

But, "Officials say that changed shortly after Comey's firing", the Post reports.

A spokesman for Mr Mueller's team declined to comment.

Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, also has retained an attorney to represent him. Fifty-eight percent of Democrats said Comey hurt Trump, while 28 percent of Republicans shared the same opinion.
