Trump urged by allies to fire special prosecutor in Russian Federation probe

As Mueller builds his legal team, Trump's allies have begun raising questions about the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's impartiality, suggesting he can not be trusted to lead the probe.

"I think that Mueller shouldn't have taken the position", Ruddy said, "if he was under consideration and had a private conversation with the president and was privy maybe to some of his thoughts about that investigation or other matters before the bureau".

In every practical sense, Trump is stuck with Mueller.

The reports follow Newsmax CEO and Trump confidante, Chris Ruddy, telling "PBS Newshour" he believes the president is considering firing Mueller.

After President Donald Trump's friend, Chris Ruddy, said Monday night that Trump is considering firing Mueller, Rosenstein said in a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing that Mueller can "only be fired for good cause", and it would be his job to put that good cause into writing.

Rosenstein's letter critical of Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email server investigation served as the Trump White House's first reasoning for firing Comey - though Trump later undercut that explanation by saying he fired Comey in hopes of ending the Russian Federation probe. And yet when asked by George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' This Week whether the president would promise not to interfere with the special counsel probe, his lawyer Jay Sekulow offered no such guarantee - feeding speculation about what Trump might do.

"Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair", the former Speaker of the House wrote on Twitter early Monday.

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said on "Anderson Cooper 360" that should Trump choose to fire Mueller the job would actually fall to Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who just appointed Mueller in mid-May to take over the Russian Federation probe in the wake of Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Gingrich and Ruddy said it would be a "mistake" for Trump to remove Mueller, although both said they see the probe as unnecessary. Rosenstein said Tuesday that Mueller has his full backing to conduct an independent investigation.

Under current Justice Department regulations, such a firing would have to be done by Rosenstein, not the president - though those regulations could theoretically be set aside. Sessions made that choice because of his own conversations with Russian officials during the Trump transition - a potential part of the probe.

Rep. Adam B. Schiff of California, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, scoffed at the idea that the president might fire Mueller.

The talk about dismissing Mr Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies, including some close to White House strategist Steve Bannon, who are increasingly frustrated with the prospect of a long and winding probe.

On college campuses, for example, students who support Trump say they have received threats - even death threats, Gingrich said. The person demanded anonymity to discuss strategy on the sensitive matter.

Ruddy later confirmed the comment to CNN.

"Look, the president of the United States, as we all know, is a unitary executive". Conservative writers, radio hosts and cable personalities - emboldened by the president himself, who has called it a witch hunt - have repeatedly sought to discredit the inquiry, its investigators, the mainstream news accounts of it, and the lawmakers on Capitol Hill who are demanding more answers.

In addition, Comey has said Sessions did not respond when he complained that he did not want to be left alone with Trump again.

"I never said I spoke to the President", he added. "I always speak for myself and not the President".
