Turkish police use tear gas to prevent LGBT pride march in Istanbul

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley

On June 28, 1970, more than 2,000 people marched in the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, marking the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and, subsequently, the first LGBT Pride March in US history. For several years, Pride Week in Istanbul attracte. In some they were welcomed and invited to speak; in others, the activists interrupted parades and clashed with police, leading to an unconfirmed number of arrests.

The protests disrupted other pride events earlier this month.

"It's just equality, and after going to the pride parade, I understand everything now and I know how to accept people better", said a mother-daughter duo from Canada. "So we have a lot more work to do, that's why we are here today".

People packed Market Street in San Francisco to watch and take part in the 47 annual San Francisco Pride Parade this weekend. She said it was after she saw a rise in violence against gays and lesbians.

Since 2003, Istanbul's Pride Week drew thousands of participants, making it one of the largest LGBTI gatherings in the Muslim world.

But anti-police protesters disrupted the parade with chants of: "No justice, no peace, no pride in police" and carried signs reading "Justice for Philando" and "Black Lives Matter".

Grand marshals for the NYC Pride 2017 include the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its NY office (NYCLU); Brooke Guinan, the first transgender women in the NYC fire department; Krishna Stone, an HIV/AIDS activist; and Geng Le, a gay rights activist from China.

Chelsea Manning, the transgender US army soldier who was imprisoned for leaking classified military information about the Iraq war before being released through a pardon by outgoing president Barack Obama, celebrated her first New York City Pride March on Sunday in front of a float sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

NYC Pride organizers said they have a policy against restricting groups from participating.

But some protesters made a decision to march anyway.

Confetti falls over SF Balloon Magic marchers during the Pride parade in San Francisco, Sunday, June 25, 2017.

"We will not allow this march which calls itself a pride march but in reality is normalizing and encouraging immorality and tawdryness that touches the nerves of society", the statement said. The events passed peacefully without police intervention. Parade organizers said members of Alperen were among those detained by police. They're trying to address it through a "good working relationship" with the NYPD.

48 years ago on June 28, 1969, a series of spontaneous demonstrations and riots erupted following a police raid at the Stonewall Inn. "We've come a long way since then". New York's first Pride march started close by a year later. But they will continue after Pride ends.
