U.S. president confirms he is under FBI investigation

His investigation then grew to include looking at whether President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey because he was unwilling to back off the Russian Federation investigation.

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy, a friend of the President, said earlier this week that Trump was considering firing Mueller, who has been appointed to investigate Russia's influence on the 2016 presidential election.

President Donald Trump made a surprising comment about the possible investigation into obstruction of justice for firing former FBI Director James Comey. Though Mr Pence was not involved in Mr Trump's presidential campaign, he may be called as a witness in the investigation into links between the Trump campaign team and Russian Federation. Mr Rosenstein wrote a memo criticising former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey's handling of the email server scandal that was initially used by the White House to justify the firing of Mr Comey.

The memo comes as U.S. Vice President Mike Pence's office said he had hired a lawyer, known for defending government officials in high-profile investigations, to help him with the probes into the alleged Russian interference and possible ties to the Trump campaign. "Sad!" Trump tweeted Friday morning.

Friday's tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses by the president after a report by The Washington Post that Mueller was looking into whether Trump obstructed justice.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wrote a memo the White House used to justify the firing of the ex-FBI chief. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who said she's anxious that the President will try to fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

While accusing the Clinton campaign and the Obama administration of indulging in illegal acts, Trump had said that "there was never a special counsel appointed to oversee the acts of his Democrat predecessors".

Trump is an avid user of Twitter, with over 32 million followers on his personal account and more than 18 million people on the official presidential account.

Trump confirmed in a tweet Friday he was under investigation and appeared to take aim at Rosenstein, calling the investigation a "witch hunt".

Known to watch cable news often, Trump has even taken to recording morning shows to watch later in the day and has "complained nonstop". Comey testified before the Senate intelligence committee he felt pressured by the White House to drop the investigation. "Nice", the president wrote on Twitter.

He had likened the appointment of the special counsel with the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history".
