Uber board weighs report on workplace culture

Another publication reported that one of Mr Holder's recommendations was that Emil Michael, Uber's senior vice-president of business and a close friend of Mr Kalanick, should leave the firm.

More shake-ups are coming to Uber after a meeting Sunday, in which the board of directors reportedly voted to accept all of the recommendations made by former US Attorney General Eric Holder.

The recommendations would be released to employees on Tuesday, said a board representative, who wished to remain anonymous.

Uber's directors are also reportedly considering the exit of Emil Michael, SVP of Business at Uber.

Kalanick called the allegations "abhorrent" - and in a separate probe, commissioned after Fowler's post, the Perkins Coie law firm examined 215 claims of harassment, bullying and inappropriate behavior.

Sources say that his forceful personality and super-voting shares have won him broad boardroom deference in the past, and any decision to leave would ultimately be his. Given how the company still didn't complete its search for a Chief Operating Officer that started in March, it's now unclear who would lead its management in case Kalanick ends up taking a leave of absence.

Under Kalanick, Uber has shaken up the taxi industry in hundreds of cities and become the world's most valuable start-up. The company is now looking for a chief financial officer and a chief operating officer as it considers an initial public offering. While the CEO himself initially told individuals he may need a break following the death of his mother in a boat accident that also sent his father to the hospital, this move could destabilise Uber's leadership hierarchy.

While there seems to be no end to controversies at Uber, the reports on it obtaining and keeping the medical record of the Delhi rape survivor seems to have been the nail in the coffin.

The company has said that all recommendations from Holder's investigation are to be implemented. Kalanick disavowed and publicly criticized the comments.

"I signed on with the company nearly four years ago and it has truly been the experience of a lifetime helping Uber become the fastest growing company of all-time - spanning 75 countries with over 14,000 employees", Michael wrote in his goodbye letter first posted on The New York Times.

Uber is now mired in legal issues and internal woes, not only with corporate leadership being called into question, but their foray into self-driving automobile technology coming under attack from Alphabet's Waymo.
