Uber CEO to take indefinite leave of absence

The report says that the company will convey the results of a probe conducted by Eric Holder, the former USA attorney general who Uber hired to look into allegations of harassment, discrimination and an aggressive culture.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick will step aside from his role for an unspecified amount of time, according to a company-wide email he sent to staff Tuesday.

Uber's board includes Kalanick, his cofounder Garrett Camp, Uber's first CEO Ryan Graves, longtime Uber investor Bill Gurley and Arianna Huffington, among others.

The move confirmed what has been reported in the media since Sunday, that the 40-year-old co-founder of Uber, a startup now worth 68 billion USA dollars according to some estimates, will leave as recommended by an outside team.

"We have watched as senior, visible people in the larger tech ecosystem excuse the reprehensible behavior of some individuals, and we have observed the pattern of passing around bad actors from company to company", the report said, via USA TODAY. Last week, the company fired 20 people including some managers at the recommendation of Perkins Coie, which probed specific complaints made to the company about sex harassment, bullying, and retaliation for reporting problems.

Fowler's harrowing account of the sexism and harassment she said she experienced at the ride hailing company caused a backlash that resulted in as many as 500,000 account deletions. That included a search for a COO who might do for Kalanick what Sheryl Sandberg did for Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook. It means the company must interview at least one woman and one underrepresented minority for key positions. "Upper management told me that he "was a high performer" (i.e. had stellar performance reviews from his superiors) and they wouldn't feel comfortable punishing him for what was probably just an innocent mistake on his part".

Rethink Uber's 14 cultural values.

Claims about Uber's sexist work environment were ironically confirmed at the very same meeting, when one of its board members, the billionaire David Bonderman, joked that more women on the board would merely lead to "more talking".

Uber is up to its ears in trouble, and big changes may be required to get the company back on the right track. A spokesperson said Uber will now offer free dinner at 7 p.m. on weekdays; the dinner time was previously 8:15 p.m.

Among other recommendations, the report also suggested that the company should explicitly prohibit intimate or romantic relationships between an employee and his or her supervisors, and significantly increase its efforts to hire a more diverse workforce. Quote, "if we are going to work on Uber 2.0, I also need to work on Travis 2.0 to become the leader that this company needs and that you deserve", he wrote.

"While change does not happen overnight, we're committed to rebuilding trust with our employees, riders and drivers".

Uber holds its catered dinner for employees at 8:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Executive compensation should be tied to senior leaders' ability to uphold values such as ethical business practices, diversity and inclusion.
