Uber considering leave for CEO

Another report claims that Kalanick is considering at least a temporary departure from the company in the wake of these recent revelations.

According to sources speaking with the New York Times, the question of whether Kalanick should take a leave of absense rests in the hands of Garrett Camp, Uber's chairman, and board member Ryan Graves.

More significantly, former Uber executive Eric Alexander was found to have obtained the personal medical records of a customer who was raped by a driver in India in 2014, Recode previously reported.

Under Kalanick's tenure, female employees alleged systematic mistreatment by male colleagues.

The vote comes almost four months after a former engineer, Susan Fowler, published a blog post alleging that a superior propositioned her on her first day. In another experience, management bought 200 male engineers leather jackets but refused to pay for female employees to receive any.

A spokesman for the San Francisco ride-service firm confirmed that the board met with Holder and Tammy Albarrán, both partners with Covington & Burling, a law firm hired to investigate complaints of widespread sexual harassment and other deep-seated cultural problems at Uber. The board announced today that it had unanimously voted to follow all recommendations given in the report once details are made available.

Congress is considering an investigation into Uber's tracking practices following complaints from consumer groups. This would make Kalanick's own future in Uber less stable than when he left, particularly if his promise of becoming a better leader a few months ago to employees is proven to be nothing but hot air. His mother was killed in late May after the boat she and her husband were riding in hit a rock.

As attention turns to Uber's chief executive and one of his deputies, the uncertainty highlights a critical weakness in the company's top ranks.

On Tuesday, Uber responded to that report's findings by saying the company had fired 20 employees for a variety of reasons, and was increasing training and adopting new policies. According to an unnamed Uber official cited by Reuters, the voting took place at a Sunday board meeting, the same one during which the possibility of Kalanick taking a leave of absence came up. Previously, Saint John worked as head of global consumer marketing for Apple.
