Uber dismisses over 20 employees after law firm's probe

The investigation, run by the law firm Perkins Coie, was launched after the February departure of an Uber employee, Susan Fowler, who alleged systemic sexual harassment and discrimination during her year working as an engineer at the ride-hailing giant. Fowler said that her boss at Uber made sexual advances towards her and that HR dismissed her complaints, saying the man was a "high performer" and wasn't likely to be disciplined.

Perkins Coie looked into 215 claims made through the hotline - the majority of which were raised by team members in San Francisco - and took no action in 100 instances. According to Uber they hired former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to lead their second investigation into company culture. They added that these details were shared with Uber employees in a meeting on Tuesday.

Uber has also hired two women in senior executive roles: Harvard Business School Professor Frances Frei and Bozoma Saint John, Apple's former head of global and consumer marketing for iTunes and Apple Music.

Levandowski, a former Google engineer, left the tech giant to set up his own autonomous trucking company, Otto, which was snapped up by Uber for $680m in 2016.

Going back as far as 2012, Perkins Coie investigated 215 complaints against staff.

The probe into Fowler's complaints is still underway, and Wilson wouldn't say if any of those fired, or 31 other employees placed in counseling, were involved in that.

In a memo to employees, he said he would bring on Holder to conduct an independent investigation into the incidents detailed in the blog post.

According to experts, the firings on Tuesday are likely just the tip of the iceberg of Uber's response to the investigations.

Uber may be the most valuable privately held company in the world, but that doesn't mean it's making money.

For a while, this served it well.

Uber is acting fast after an investigation substantiated multiple reports of sexual harassment at the company, CNN reports. But this year, Uber's aggressive corporate culture and its 40-year-old CEO's self-admitted need to "fundamentally change and grow up" has caught up with it.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick speaks to students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Mumbai, India on January 19, 2016. Last week the company revealed that its chief financial officer Gautam Gupta was also leaving.
