UK PM Thersa May and DUP have largely agreed support deal

The PM also faced calls from Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson, whose influence has grown dramatically with the election of 13 Tories north of the border, to pursue a softer Brexit with greater focus on the economy and more cross-party input.

May's party fell eight seats short of retaining their parliamentary majority, and is now in talks with Northern Ireland's ultra-conservative Democratic Union Party (DUP), which won 10 seats, to forge an informal alliance.

In a reflection of her newfound humility, May managed a joke at her own expense as Britain's House of Commons got underway in the first sitting after Thursday's general election.

"I got us into this mess, and I'm going to get us out", she said.

Mrs Foster said: "We've had some very good discussions today and those discussions are continuing this afternoon".

May appeared contrite, sought to apologize for her failed election gamble and gave an explanation of what went wrong, according to the report. She added that there should be "changes in the offer on Brexit as we go forward" - a direct challenge to the prime minister's authority.

Downing Street has insisted that Thursday's general election - which Theresa May had hoped would strengthen her mandate for negotiations but ended up creating a hung Parliament - will not change the approach to Brexit it set out past year.

"Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said the government should put economic growth at the heart of its Brexit strategy, comments placing her in the camp of those advocating a closer trade relationship with the European Union, or "soft" Brexit".

Advocates of a "soft Brexit" scenario say Britain could retain access to the European single market like non-EU member Norway and allow certain levels of EU immigration.

Brexit minister David Davis took a harder tone, however, when he took to the airwaves on Monday.

On the political consequences of Britain leaving the EU, he said: "The UK government has chose to go further than the requirements of the referendum decision of 23 June 2016, and to leave the Customs Union, and the European Economic Area as well, and to reject any jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice, adds to the difficulties".

She added: "We want to see proper LGBT rights across the United Kingdom, and here we have a party that has consistently opposed LGBT equality deciding the government".

Video: Who is the DUP leader, Arlene Foster?

The British general election last week has done little to remove the uncertainty facing the business community and Britain's global partners as it delivered a shock hung Parliament, forcing the government to turn to the right-wing Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) for support. Social care costs needed a bigger contribution from those who need support, we were told without warning, until the policy was re-written just as abruptly.

With opinion polls showing the Conservatives had a commanding lead over the opposition Labour Party, May called an early election in hopes of increasing her majority in Parliament and strengthening her position in Brexit negotiations.

Writing in The Sun, the Foreign Secretary said May dseserved the backing of the Conservative Party, having secured the largest number of Tory votes since the days of Margaret Thatcher.

"We had a march through the city at the weekend with about a thousand people turn up". This is the third year running that they have been accosted at stations and asked for their support, or had campaign literature thrust into their hands.

Schaeuble predicted Britain would later regret its departure from the bloc "and then they'll come back".

As discussion continued, a leading business organization said the political uncertainty is leading to a "dramatic drop" in confidence. "They overwhelmingly want us to get on with the job".
