UK's May faces calls to soften Brexit as political limbo drags on

Arlene Foster to finalise deal in London after weekend talks with Tories make'good progress

Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, warned Tuesday that "the current uncertainty can not continue" and on Wednesday issued five "pressing questions" on Twitter.

The European Parliament's Brexit negotiator, Guy Verhofstadt, also expressed his frustration.

She reportedly apologised to Tory MPs, accepting personal responsibility for failing to win an outright victory and sacrificing the parliamentary majority she inherited from David Cameron when she became leader after the Brexit referendum a year ago.

May, who ahead of the June referendum supported remaining in the European Union, has promised to start the formal Brexit talks next week, but opponents of a sharp break with the European Union took her woes as a chance to push back against her strategy.

Another problem Prime Minister May faces is the fact that she wasn't able to commandeer a majority in the House of Commons either, leaving her underpowered. She was described over the weekend by the former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne as a "dead woman walking".

"We will continue to take the fight to the Tories and I will be out campaigning around the country in Conservative marginals in those extra seats we need to gain to deliver the government for the many that nearly 13 million people voted for last week".

A key figure in all this is Ruth Davidson, who leads the Scottish Conservative Party.

Sir John told BBC Radio 4's World at One that if the party "locked" itself into a deal with one of the main parties in Northern Ireland, there was a danger the government would no longer be seen as an "impartial honest broker" in restoring the power-sharing arrangements and upholding Northern Ireland institutions.

Speaking alongside the President at the Elysee Palace, she said: "I confirmed to President Macron that the timetable for the Brexit negotiation remains on course and will begin next week".

May is now in talks with Northern Ireland's ultra-conservative Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) - which won 10 seats - to forge an informal alliance.

The Prime Minister needs the votes of the DUP's 10 MPs to support her minority government as she hopes to steer government business, like the Queen's Speech and Budget, through the Commons.

Although it campaigned for Brexit, it is aware that more than 50 percent of Northern Ireland citizens voted to remain in the European Union referendum, June 23, 2016. At the same time, there are differences between what the DUP wants and what May wants. May has also said there should be no hard border.

May moved to demonstrate that she understands the frustration of voters by moving up a meeting with rank-and-file Conservative Party lawmakers, some of whom have called for her to step aside sooner rather than later.

May is under pressure to take on a more cross-party approach to the negotiations surrounding Brexit. He argues that without that option, the government's position would be weakened.

Labour secured 262 seats in the general election, 64 short of a majority.

Mr Corbyn warned against a "coalition of chaos" between the Conservatives and the DUP and said Labour was ready to provide "strong and stable leadership", mocking two slogans used by Mrs May during the campaign. They are all rights issues subject to previous agreements.

Opposition parties had called for a general election ever since the success of Brexit last June since technically May had not been elected.

If the government are defeated in the Queen's speech, a vote of no confidence could be triggered. Ministers are already conceding they may have to prune back their ambitions.

May spent months telling us that "Brexit means Brexit".

But within the Conservative Party, the election recriminations are continuing.
