United Kingdom royals hold London fire minute of silence

The local Grenfell Action Group had claimed, before and during a major 10-million-pound refurbishment of Grenfell Tower previous year, that the block constituted a fire risk and residents had warned that access to the site for emergency vehicles was "severely restricted". The BBC understands the death toll could rise to about 70 people in total.

Experts believe the building's new exterior cladding, which contained insulation, helped spread the flames quickly up the outside of the public housing tower early Wednesday.

"My understanding is that the cladding that was reported wasn't in accordance with United Kingdom building regulations", Hands told Sky News.

The cladding used to insulate Grenfell Tower, widely blamed for spreading the devastating blaze, is banned in Britain, Philip Hammond has said.

"The Prime Minister needs to act immediately to ensure that all evidence is protected so that everyone culpable for what happened at Grenfell Tower is held to account and feels the full force of the law", he added.

Nisha Parti, who has been helping victims, revealed that the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire have only received £10 and minimal help from the council.

Lammy, who lost a friend in the fire - talented young artist Khadija Saye - also highlighted people's concerns that evidence concerning the tower's recent refurbishment might be destroyed or lost before it can be seized by police.

Previously, the Metropolitan Police had confirmed 30 people had been killed in the inferno; the announcement Saturday almost doubles that number. He has not provided details about the inquiry.

Faith leaders in London have called for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire to be rehoused in decent housing rather than sent to "cheaper places far from London".

Mr Khan said: "People are angry, not simply at the poor response in the days afterwards from the council and the government, but at the years of neglect from the council".

The leader of Britain's main opposition party is calling for the government to take over empty homes for use by residents displaced by the London high-rise fire.

Photos released by London's Metropolitan Police show the destruction caused by last week's deadly inferno.

Corbyn's comments come a day after British Prime Minister Theresa May said that support for families in the initial aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire "was not good enough".

The Prime Minister said her government would do "whatever it takes to help those affected, get justice and keep our people safe" and that the disaster was an "unimaginable tragedy for the community, and for our country".

The Government's £5 million emergency fund is already being spent on clothing and food to help the dispossessed and NHS London will provide counselling and bereavement support to families.

"Sadly at this time, there are 58 people who we have been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and therefore sadly I have to assume that they are dead", a police spokesman told reporters.

Police have said 58 people reported missing in the London fire are presumed dead. This relies on dental records, fingerprints and DNA when possible and also features like tattoos or scars.
