United Orders 100 of Newest Boeing Jet, Delta Chooses Airbus

Ryanair Boeing 737 MAX

The third, Indonesia's Lion Mentari Airlines PT, announced an order for the 737 Max 10 on Monday, hours after Boeing formally launched the latest member of an aircraft family that has flown for a half century.

A Boing 737 MAX 9 performs his demonstration flight at Paris Air Show, in Le Bourget, east of Paris, France, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in Paris. Average fares fell by 13 percent to 41 euros (45.51 USA dollars) as it passed on savings due to falling fuel costs.

"They would do that, the 747-8 isn't selling", Airbus sales chief John Leahy said of Boeing's decision to ditch its separate forecast for the biggest planes.

It also won a boost from leasing giant AerCap for its 787 Dreamliner long-range jet, which sits in a category for which demand has been fragile over the past year.

After a show in which both manufacturers did brisk business under a sweltering sun, the European planemaker said today it won 326 net new orders and commitments while U.S. rival Boeing said its total was 571. Including engines, deal worth $1.16 billion.

Panama-based Copa Airlines converted part of a previous order for 737 MAXs to 15 MAX 10s, chosen for its "additional flexibility for certain segments of our network", Copa VP Ahmad Zamany said in Paris. Boeing said the order, valued at $112.4 million, was previously attributed to an unidentified customer. And the new Boeing jet has become the most anticipated airplane in commercial aviation.

Airbus insists the double-decker A380 has a future due to airport congestion and predicts 5 per cent of aircraft delivered over the next 20 years will be in that category. The 737 MAX 10 (737-10) accounted for "more than 361 orders and commitments from 16 customers" according to the company.

Iran chose Airbus as a supplier-but even the last-minute deal left the French firm far behind Boeing in terms of new business gained.

Pledges to buy the new single-aisle 737 Max 10, which Boeing began marketing in Paris to rival Airbus's A321neo, amounted to 361 airliners, he said.

For the industry, their popularity begs a vital question: how do you make sure that swarms of new machines don't endanger each other, other users of the skies and people on the ground as they do everything from patrolling traffic blackspots to, possibly, delivering your burger and fries?
