United States attorney general Jeff Sessions to give evidence in Russian Federation 'meddling' probe

Sessions to testify before Senate intelligence panel

Fellow Republicans pressed President Donald Trump on Sunday to come clean about whether he has tapes of private conversations with former FBI Director James Comey and provide them to Congress if he does - or possibly face a subpoena - as a Senate investigation into collusion with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice extended to a Trump Cabinet member.

In a letter seen by Reuters, Sessions told Senator Richard Shelby, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, that the committee is the "most appropriate" place to address matters that came up during Comey's Senate hearing on Thursday.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions speaks about organized gang violence at the Department of Justice, on April 18, 2017. The DOJ fired back with a response saying Sessions recused himself only because he was involved in President Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. If, as the president said, I was sacked because of the Russian Federation investigation, why was the attorney general involved in that chain?

Last week, ABC News learned that the relationship between Trump and Sessions had declined to the point that Sessions recently suggested he could resign. At the time he said the investigation would be overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who last month appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to conduct the inquiry.

When the two men were alone, the ex-FBI director said, Trump urged Comey to stop the investigation into fired national security advisor Michael Flynn.

In the most eagerly anticipated US congressional hearing in years, Mr. Comey told lawmakers the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the President dismissed him on May 9. During his January confirmation hearing he failed to disclose meetings he held with Russian officials.

Mr Shelby chairs the Senate appropriations sub-committee.

"The attorney -general was not silent; he responded to this comment by saying that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice needed to be careful about following appropriate policies regarding contacts with the White House", the statement said.

Sessions is likely to be asked about his conversations with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and whether there were more encounters that should have been made public. "You can't run forever", Leahy said in a Twitter message to Sessions that also referred to "false testimony" by the attorney general about his contacts with Russian officials. "My sense was the attorney general knew he shouldn't be leaving", Comey added.

"The Department of Justice appointed special counsel to assume responsibility for this matter", said department spokesperson Sarah Isgur Flores, referring to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to oversee the department's Russian Federation probe.
