United States officer cleared for fatal shooting of man

Castile's family reacted angrily to the verdict.

A United States police officer has been acquitted in the slaying of a black motorist he shot five times during a traffic stop past year, an incident that drew national attention after the victim's girlfriend live-streamed the bloody aftermath on social media. "I am so disappointed in the state of Minnesota. I'm mad as hell right now, yes, I am", she said.

Following the shooting, Yanez was placed on administrative leave and later charged with second-degree manslaughter, which is punishable by up to 10 years in jail.

Castile worked at J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School in St Paul. Shortly after the verdict, the city announced Yanez would not be returning to its force.

The rally grew to almost 2,000 strong by 9 p.m. when demonstrators began moving west on University Avenue, away from the Capitol.

The protesters carried signs reading: "Black Lives Matter" and "Blue Lies Matter" and chanting such phrases as 'Hands up, don't shoot'.

The protest was peaceful, but around 500 protesters later made their way onto Interstate 94 freeway and blocked traffic for more than an hour. On Saturday, people gathered in Minneapolis, marching from Loring Park into downtown Minneapolis.

Authorities arrested 18 people during a protest of the acquittal of a suburban Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed a black driver.

The case was the first time that a police officer in Minnesota faced charges for the death of a civilian. Family and friends of Valerie Castile and Philando Castile walked out of the courthouse in shock after Jeronimo Yanez was found not guilty on all counts in the shooting death of Philando Castile, Friday, June 16, .

Prosecutors in St. Paul, Minnesota, said recordings from the auto - both from Reynolds' phone and from a dashboard camera - showed that Castile was courteous and non-threatening, and they told the court there was no justification for Yanez' action.

Local attorney and activist Nekima Levy-Pounds addressed the group with a megaphone.

"This incident seemed so egregious and avoidable that we hoped that this time, it might be different - that this time, justice might be served", the statement said.

The system continues to fail black people. Her 4-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle at the time.

During the testimony, Yanez said he was "scared to death" and thought of his wife and baby daughter in before he fired the shots.

Following are some reactions by Twitter users on the verdict.

Head of the National African American Gun Association Philip Smith suggested police officers receive more training to learn that black people also have Second Amendment rights.

Trump has yet to make any public statements about the verdict.
