United States senators dare Trump to veto sanctions against Russian Federation

Bill gives Congress powers to block Trump from rolling back any penalties.

The vote was on a procedural motion to attach the Russian sanctions provisions to a larger package of Iran sanctions that also has bipartisan support.

The bill penalizes Moscow for interfering in the 2016 election by imposing sanctions on key sectors of Russia's economy, including mining, metals, shipping and railways.

The Senate-passed sanctions bill also converts existing penalties against Moscow into law, potentially making them more hard to remove, and prevents the Trump administration from returning two Russian diplomatic compounds seized in December by the Obama administration as punishment for alleged electoral disruption.

"This bill will impose sanctions on Iran for its non-nuclear violations", Cardin said.

Senators insisted the new Iran sanctions won't undermine or impede enforcement of the landmark nuclear deal that Obama and other countries reached with Tehran two years ago. Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rand Paul of Kentucky were the only votes against the bill.

It comes amid concerns that members of Mr Trump's campaign team colluded with Russian Federation over the election.

The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to move forward with new sanctions on Russian Federation for allegedly interfering in the 2016 election.

"We see destabilizing act after destabilizing act [by Iran], from missile launches to arms transfers to terrorist training to illicit financial activities to targeting Navy ships and detaining American citizens", said the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Republican Bob Corker of Tennessee.

According to Politico, a senior administration official stated that the "White House is concerned that the legislation would tie its hands on U.S. -Russia relations".

As further punishment for Russia's involvement in the election, as well as wars in Syria and Ukraine, new sanctions would be placed on Russians who supply weapons to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, violate human rights or conduct cyberactivity for the government.

She's urging the House to follow suit with similar legislation and calling on President Trump to sign the measure - which is attached to the popular Iran sanctions bill. The Crapo Amendment on Russian Federation mostly was created to prevent the president from removing any sanctions without Congressional permission, but quickly expanded to include large new sanctions against mining and energy production within Russian Federation.
