Universal Adds Two More Monsters To Their Dark Universe

James Comey in Washington D.C

The new age of female-led blockbusters, or the classic action star, carrying classic movie monsters on his back?

1923's The Phantom of the Opera and 1925's The Hunchback of Notre Dame were two of Universal's first monster movies, and they laid the groundwork for the studio's later films.

The Bride of Frankenstein officially follows The Mummy as the next instalment in Universal's new Dark Universe franchise - a shared universe of films resurrecting creatures from the old Universal monster movies.

Kurtzman said that they Dark Universe may not be exclusively populated by household name monsters.

"We know we're going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Invisible Man". Meanwhile, former "Dracula" movies were loosely based on Bram Stoker's novel of the same name. The latter is also known for being adapted into a stage musical. If the films do take us back to the past, maybe Prodigium, the secret organization whose objective is to track, study, and-when necessary-destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world, has existed a lot longer than we thought. We also already know we'll get an Invisible Man film starring Johnny Depp.

Interestingly, Kurtzman also casually named Dracula, which has thus far been left out of the Dark Universe since Gary Shore's Dracula Untold starring Luke Evans was initially announced to be the first film of the cinematic universe.

"There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off".

That being said, we'll have to wait and see how The Mummy performs over the weekend to see if audiences are really interested in this new world of gods and monsters. They will of course be looking for a big start at the box office upon the film's upcoming release.

Even before The Mummy comes out in theaters, Universal is slowly letting details trickle in regarding their other planned movies for the Dark Universe.
