Updates from the June 11th Tony Awards

Kevin Spacey and the cast of Dear Evan Hansen perform at the 71st annual Tony Awards on Sunday in NY.

"Dear Evan Hansen" star Ben Platt, 23, is the youngest sole victor for Best Actor (Musical); teens David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, & Kiril Kulish shared in the award for "Billy Elliot" in 2009. The wins include Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Best Orchestrations.

"Come From Away" star Jenn Colella lost the best featured actress in a musical Tony to Rachel Bay Jones of "Dear Evan Hansen", while choreographer Kelly Devine lost to Andy Blankenbuehler for "Bandstand".

"Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812" had 12 nominations, which was more than any other Broadway production. Andy Blankenbuehler dedicated his award of best choreography in a musical for "Bandstand" to his grandfather, and proudly displayed his grandfather's war tags in homage. And best director of a musical went to Christopher Ashley of "Come From Away", the crowd-pleasing show about the people of Gander, Newfoundland, who sheltered thousands of stranded airline passengers on September 11.

Michael Greif has now helmed two Best Musical champs ("Rent" and "Dear Evan Hansen") without winning Best Director.

The melody came from the night's big victor "Dear Evan Hansen", the musical about adolescent angst, the aftermath of suicide and power of social media captured the imagination of Tony voters.

Kevin Spacey hosted the star-studded 71st annual awards ceremony reprising his role as House of Cards' Frank Underwood and throwing in some singing and dancing.

"I'd like to thank the American Theater Wing to begin with, and all the Tony voters", she said, "many of whom I've dated". How dare you try and shut up Queen Bette.

Award presenter Stephen Colbert got political too, taking on Donald Trump by likening his presidency to a revival of a 1980s off-Broadway show with "huge production values". Midler wasn't the only household name to win; Kevin Kline, Cynthia Nixon and Laurie Metcalfe were recognized.
