US lawmaker shot by anti-Trump gunman showing improvement

A playground near the baseball field is cordoned off with police tape as the investigation continue at the scene in Alexandria Va. Thursday

Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against U.S. president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers.

Two sources close to the congressman's family said medical staff removed a tube that had been inserted into Scalise's abdomen to prevent fluid from going into his lungs while being sedated, The Baton Rouge Advocate reported. That circumstance is not uncommon for that type of injury, known as a transpelvic gunshot wound, the trauma surgeon said. "He underwent another surgery today, but continues to show signs of improvement", the hospital said in a statement released Saturday.

The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that it continues to process evidence and "to assess the potential motivations of the single shooter".

Hodgkinson was said to have been motivated by grievances against President Donald Trump. The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed. Investigators are trying to determine what his intent may have been - whether it was a list of potential targets for violence or whether he wrote them down for some other reason, one official said. Scalise will undergo more operations. Infection remains a considerable risk in the days and weeks during Scalise's extended hospital stay, Sava said.

The statement noted that there would be no further updates on Scalise's condition for the rest of the weekend. However, Sava said that the doctors "are encouraged by improvement in his condition" and "an excellent recovery is a good possibility".

The man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers.

Suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.
