US Open 2017: Brooks Koepka earns maiden major championship

Brooks Koepka received a succinct piece of advice from a valuable source on the eve of the U.S. Open's final round.

So what else transpired during the final round of the U.S. Open - other than Brooks Koepka's first major victory? Playing out of the penultimate twosome, the FSU product striped 12 (of 14) fairways and pelted 17 greens in regulation, gaining 5.181 strokes tee-to-green.

Koepka won by four over third-round leader Brian Harman (70), who was done in by back-to-back bogeys when Koepka was making his run, and Hideki Matsuyama, whose 66 was the day's best round.

Henderson won twice previous year, taking the KPMG Women's PGA Championship for her first major, and successfully defending her title in the Cambia Portland Classic.

With athleticism and power, and four straight putts on the back nine that allowed him to pull away, Koepka capped off his hardscrabble journey around the world by winning his first major at home.

However, the 26-year-old from Southport then bogeyed the sixth after hitting a poor chip across the green and dropped another shot on the eighth after firing his approach over the green.

The miscues put Koepka alone back on top of the leaderboard, a perch from which he would not be removed.

The muscular American, who started the day one back of the lead, tamed his nerves and a wind-whipped course, carding six birdies, including two to kick-start his round, against a single bogey for a five-under 67. As Bobby Jones said of Jack Nicklaus' prodigious drives when Jack won the 1965 Masters, "Nicklaus played a game with which I am not familiar". "I played two good rounds, but it wasn't enough".

In defense of his 2016 U.S. Open title, Dustin Johnson failed to make the cut this week. It's not the longest hole and one that mitigated Koepka's distance advantage.

McIlroy finished at 16-under 268 when he won on rain-softened Congressional in the 2011 U.S. Open.

Koepka tied for 13th in last year's Open at Oakmont. Scheffler finished ahead of Texas A&M's Cameron Champ, who entered Sunday's final round with a two-shot lead over Scheffler, shot a 4-over 76 to finish at 288.

Emotion? The most he displayed was a light fist pump, his hand clenched a little tighter with each birdie, and a double fist pump on the 18th when he tapped in for par. "But I can't complain the way I finished it", Stricker said.

Spieth is well off the lead of 12 under held by Brian Harman.

The buddies who shared a house near Erin Hills also shared the misery during a wind-swept final round in which they never got themselves into the mix.

With a gusty wind blowing across Erin Hills, Spieth's first shot at the par-3 13th hole landed about 5 feet from the flag.

"I thought it was a fantastic round of golf, given what we were dealing with to start the day", the 23-year-old said.

Former champion Jordan Spieth was among the interested spectators as the US Open headed for a thrilling climax at Erin Hills on Sunday. He putted for birdie to move to 2 under for the day and 2 over for the tournament. Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are tied for second, one shot back. He said he would rather be out on the course fighting for the title. "And to play well today on top of it was extra special".
