US Open golf won by Brooks Koepka in record-matching score

BrooksKoepka

The former Florida State standout closed with 5-under 67 Sunday, realizing only after his par on the final hole that a birdie would have set yet another U.S. Open record in a week filled with them.

Harman led by one stroke going into the final round but took back-to-back bogeys from the 12th and finished with another bogey at 18 as he shot 72.

But the U.S. Open is meant to punish the world's best, where bogeys are good and pars are better - and you don't see the victor make three-straight birdies late Sunday to peel away from the field.

Koepka tied for the best score in relation to par in the history of the U.S. Open with a 16-under 272 for the four rounds on the par 72 course.

Coming into this round four with a crowded field at the top of the leaderboard, Koepka, like a thoroughbred in the final straight, chose to pull away, making three birdies in a row on the back nine to leave the rest of the competition behind.

Koepka raced through the opening two holes and birdied both as be put immediate pressure on overnight leader Brian Harman.

Even with the three birdies in a row, it was a par save from nine feet at the 13th hole that Koepka credits for getting his round going.

On the last day of the U.S. Open, Hideki Matsuyama was better than everyone else.

The fifth-ranked player in the world hit a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th for a 69 to end his weekend at Erin Hills at 1-over.

Harman, level with Koepka with six to play and without a bogey on the back nine all week, took his first at the 12th after his tee shot ended up in the belt-high fescue and followed that up with another at the 13th.

7 Players finished 10 under or better; before this year, that would have won all but two U.S. Opens.

As he stepped to the makeshift awards podium on the No. 18 green at Erin Hills on Sunday, the trophy awarded to the U.S. Open Championship victor in his hands, Brooks Koepeka dedicated his win at the 117 U.S. Open to his father, Bob.

Low amateur: Scottie Scheffler was the low amateur for the U.S. Open. It was obviously playing a lot more hard, so I gave it all I had.

Graeme McDowell, also from Portrush, won the US Open 2010 with Rory McIlroy triumphing the following year.

Fowler was in it until the back nine where he made two bogeys and slid out of contention. Koepka, playing one group ahead of Harman, is at 13 under.

"I played really well today", said Matsuyama, who watched Koepka close out his title on a TV in the clubhouse. The pair were sharing a house at Erin Hills but neither one will go home happy.

Koepka's victory comes in perhaps the most prestigious tournament on the tour and the biggest of all the major championships.

Nobody in the top 16 on the leaderboard has won a major.

"It's awesome to get the calls and texts I got last night".

The only PGA Tour win of Koepka's career prior to Sunday came at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February 2015 when he narrowly won by a single stroke. "To be honest, I'm not a big golf nerd". I got off to a pretty good start, which I really haven't done yet, so that was nice.

"To finish in double digits under par at a major championship, especially the Open, it was a good week", Fowler said.
