US Open results: Brooks Koepka wins golf championship with record-equalling score

At 27-years old, Koepka is well on his way to winning even more majors in the years to come.

ERIN, Wis. (AP) - The list of places Brooks Koepka had to go to win golf tournaments looks like a page straight out of a travelogue. He earned $2.16 million, his nation's championship and the comfort of knowing the far-flung trips to Kenya and Kazakhstan and India and beyond are all in the rearview mirror.

McIlroy finished at 16-under 268 when he won on rain-softened Congressional in the 2011 U.S. Open.

"I've a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, even though I'm playing for 35th or 40th or whatever it was", a disappointed Lowry said.

"I played really well today".

Fleetwood was a lowly 188th in the world rankings last September, but has reaped the rewards of returning to his former coach Alan Thompson and employing his friend Ian Finnis - the husband of former England women's goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis - as his caddie. He tacked on 68 in R3 to begin in a three-way T2, one back of 54-hole leader Brian Harman.

For a seventh straight major, a first-timer wrapped his callow hands around the trophy.

Like Koepka, Harman hadn't bogeyed a hole on the back nine until Sunday.

If Koepka was going to get nervous, it probably would've happened when he found himself in trouble on the par-3 13th hole at about the same time that Hideki Matsuyama put together five birdies on the back nine to pull within one shot of the lead at 12-under.

As Rickie Fowler's tee shot soared into the first fairway Sunday, a man yelled: "Let's go, Rickie!"

But it's the putt he made on 18 for that bogey that's worth remembering and saluting, since missing it would have cost him $500,000. "This wind is now light compared to the beginning of the day, but that's what you get for playing a poor first few rounds". Then a couple things go the other way and maybe he doesn't win and finishes fourth or fifth like he has a couple times. Everyone giving me a piece of advice, stick to what I've done, that's what I did today.

"Yeah, I don't get those very often".

"I just tried to stay away from it but it was hard to". I think people - some of the guys - took my social media post (ripping the unplayability of some of the fescue) kind of the wrong way. You're just kind of hitting little chip cuts and just keeping it low, trying to get loose more than anything. "The conditions were so tough", Harman said.

"Even though the scores were somewhat lower than a normal US Open, to finish in double digits under par at a major championship, especially the Open, it was a good week".

Thomas, looking for more from where his record-setting 63 came from the day before, was out of contention by the middle of the front nine.

The last six majors have produced six first-time champions and that trend looks set to continue with the leaderboard dominated by mostly unheralded names.

"I feel really good about just about everything else", Spieth said.

"It is Father's Day, so hopefully - like I said, I didn't get him a card, so I really hope this works", Koepka said.

Lowry also hit a 73 the day before, a one-shot improvement on Friday's round, with the 30-year-old's best round (71) coming on the first day.

Brooks Koepka of the United States poses with the winner's trophy with Jena Sims after his victory at the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills on June 18, 2017 in Hartford, Wisconsin.

Koepka had always been thought of as a potential major champion and showed exactly why on Sunday with a near flawless performance, which saw him defy gusting winds early in his round and then capitalise on the return of calmer conditions on the back nine.

Brendan Steele, a PGA Tour victor but not much of a household name, became the first played in U.S. Open history to card 22 birdies in the week.
