US Open - the story of the third round

Paula Dougherty of Murrieta Calif. hugs her son Kevin after he finished the second round of the U.S. open golf tournament Friday

Miller, whose 8-under 63 came in the final round, and Jack Nicklaus (1980, Baltusrol) are the only players to shoot 63 in a U.S. Open and win.

But not long after he signed for his record score and an 11-under 205, he began to appreciate the significance of a 63 on this day. And those 42 are within 6 shots of the lead held by Paul Casey, Brian Harman, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka.

Rogness, who is from the Milwaukee area, said he and Blise are longtime golfers. "I know it's cliché, but the last thing you need to be doing is thinking ahead, especially on this golf course". The Japanese star birdied six of his first eight holes Friday, finishing round two at five under for the tournament.

English says "They want par to be a good score, and this afternoon it will be".

"Even just trying to take my medicine is very, very hard. It's a good 8 in the end". "I've pictured winning the U.S. Open a lot of times before".

"It's all good holing the putts on the practice green, but it's a different kettle of fish when you get out on the course and have to read slope, read downhill, uphill into the green, side green".

While the former took a share of the haflway lead with a 71 which owed so much to heart and perseverance, the latter submitted to the cut in a performance which is beginning to sum up his miserable season. "There were a couple of dicey pin placements out there that you had to be careful about, but it was still scoreable".

Matsuyama, at number four the highest ranked player still in the field, starts at five-under along with young South Korean Kim Si-woo, amateur Cameron Champ, PGA Tour rookie Xander Schauffele and veteran Brandt Snedeker. Reavie did most of his damage on the back nine, where he hit five of his eight birdies.

"It doesn't need to be too much of a change for this golf course to play pretty hard", said Casey.

"I obviously needed to nuke it", Thomas said of his 3-wood, which he later called his best of the round.

Oosthuizen, whose sole major title to date came at St Andrews in 2010, birdied the first, fourth, seventh and eighth to move to four under par, while 2015 victor Spieth had covered his first 11 holes in level par.

Willett, who pulled out before the start of his second round, was heading towards the Erin Hills exit anyway after an opening round 81.

"You'd definitely take it, said Fleetwood, whose previous best finish at the US Open is tied for 27th".

Joining Johnson, McIlroy, Day and Willett in going home early are a host of fellow big names.

One shot back. Jamie Lovemark.

Canadian Adam Hadwin is tied for 24th at two-under par after double bogeying the 17th hole on Friday for a two-over 74.

"I've been very light on competitive rounds", McIlroy said. "I needed to hit a lot of fairways, and if I do that, I'm going to play well".
