US says it downed Syrian warplane that attacked US-backed fighters

The Syrian army said the pilot was missing.

Just hours earlier, the US had bombed Syrian government and allied troops inside a protected zone in that area, and marked a sharp escalation in the skirmishes between the coalition and those pro-Syrian government forces there.

Just two hours after the coalition aircraft ended the advance by pro-regime militias with "a show of force", a Syrian Air Force SU-22 bombarded SDF fighter positions outside Ja'Din in close proximity to an established deconfliction zone.

"The Coalition presence in Syria addresses the imminent threat ISIS in Syria poses globally".

The Pentagon says pro-Assad forces initiated the fight when it bombed USA base.

Following the strike, the coalition alerted Russian counterparts to de-escalate the situation.

It said that "pro-Syrian regime forces" had earlier attacked an SDF held town south of Tabqa and wounded a number of fighters and driving them from the town.

The camp along the Syrian-Iraqi border is being used by US special operations military advisers to train Syrian militias to battle Islamic State in Raqqa and beyond. 'It exposes the devious intentions of America in running terrorism and investing in it in order to pursue its Zionist-American project in the region'.

However, U.S. officials said there appeared to be no direct link between the two attacks. The coalition said the shootdown took place "in accordance with rules of engagement and in collective self-defense of Coalition partnered forces".

It was referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, another name for Daesh.

The Pentagon confirmed at the time there were no casualties from the attack on the patrol but would not comment on whether the drone was operated by the Syrian armed forces or another foreign military. Col. John Thomas, a spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, said that the Syrian aircraft arrived with little warning and that U.S. aircraft nearby tried to hail the Syrian jet after it had dropped its bombs.

The battle to drive Isis out of swathes of territory in northern Syria has brought opposing local and worldwide actors into fresh conflict in the country's six-year-long civil war.

Turkey considers them terrorists due to their affiliation to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), an organization that has waged a violent separatist struggle in south-eastern Turkey for more than three decades.

Little progress has been made so far from talks between representatives of rebel factions and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Earlier in the civil war, Turkey in November 2015 shot down a Russian Su-24 warplane along the Turkey-Syria border in disputed circumstances.
