US Senate Passes Sanctions Against Iran And Russia

It's not yet clear how much they are looking to change.

The US Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly passed tough sanctions on Russian Federation over alleged election meddling. These latest sanctions are in retaliation for Russia's interference in last year's presidential election.

But Democrats fear that the White House would be very demanding in its efforts to dilute the legislation.

The upper chamber of Congress passed the measure 98-2 after approving an amendment a day earlier that added the Russian provisions to the bill. The sanctions targeted Russian energy products as well as "mining, metals, shipping and railways and". It's not the first time Congress has sought such a requirement, however, as a similar mechanism was passed in 2015 regarding sanctions on Iran after President Obama pursued his landmark nuclear deal with the country.

The White House is seeking to influence some GOP House members to ease up on the Senate-passed Russian Federation sanctions, hoping that the lower chamber will provide "administration-friendly" changes, according to Politico. Then again, no White House ever seems to support new limitations on its power or flexibility, regardless of the situation.

According to Politico, a senior administration official stated that the "White House is concerned that the legislation would tie its hands on U.S. -Russia relations". Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown told Politico he had heard the White House was moving forward with attempts to "slow it, block it", while Sen. This comes after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated that the new sanctions would hamper diplomacy with Russian Federation.

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the USA further sanctions would damage relations, though stopped short of saying how the Russian government would respond in kind.
