US shoots down Syrian Air Force fighter

For the first time, a USA fighter plane on Sunday shot down a Syrian aircraft, after the Assad regime's Su-22 dropped bombs near US -backed rebels near the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa.

A U.S. fighter jet shot down a Syrian regime plane Sunday after it dropped bombs on American-backed forces fighting the Islamic State group in northern Syria, the US-led coalition said.

The Syrian army said earlier that the USA -led coalition shot down one of its planes during a combat mission against Islamic State militants.

Russia's defense ministry says it is suspending coordination with the United States in Syria over so-called "de-confliction zones" after the Americans downed a Syrian government fighter jet.

Syria immediately condemned the move as a "flagrant attack" that would have "dangerous repercussions", according to the BBC.

Syria's army disputed the account, saying its plane was hit while "conducting a mission against the terrorist Islamic State group".

The US said it acted in self-defence after the Syrian regime dropped bombs near US-backed fighters.

"Pro-Syrian regime forces" could include Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's Syrian Arab Army, Lebanese Hezbollah, Iranian forces or pro-Assad militia.

Earlier this month, the USA also shot down a drone suspected of supporting Iranian-backed forces in Syria, where the battlefield has gown increasing complex and congested.

"The shooting down of a Syrian Air Force jet in Syria's airspace is a cynical violation of Syria's sovereignty".

Also on June 8, a U.S.aircraft shot down a "pro-regime" Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that had fired on coalition forces in the same area of southern Syria.

The US-led coalition command didn't use the deconfliction channel with Russian Federation to avoid an incident during an operation in Raqqa, the ministry said. The Syrian government said the pilot is missing.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that coalition warplanes are now carrying out "intensive" airstrikes in the area, while "violent clashes" between the SDF and IS continue.

The coalition said its advance was halted by an unspecified "show of force". Coalition aircraft stopped the pro-regime forces from advancing on Ja'Din.

According to the reports, a large number of terrorists have been killed in the attacks and a large amount of weapons and ammunition have been destroyed, the statement said. Eighteen people died in those attacks and dozens were wounded.
