USA lawmaker, others shot on baseball field by anti-Trump man

James T. Hodgkinson 66 anni, of Belleville, Il, identified by law enforcement officials as the deceased gunman who opened fire on GOP lawmakers at a Virginia baseball field, was "living out of his gym bag" in Alexandria. He had been living out of his van in the Alexandria area in recent months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

"Everyone on that field is a public servant", the president said. "Their sacrifice makes democracy possible".

If U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello had walked outside two minutes sooner Wednesday morning, he would have been on the baseball field at a suburban D.C. park when a man approached with a rifle.

The events left the capital horrified and stunned, and prompted immediate reflection on the current hostility and vitriol in American politics. Scalise was among five people who were sent to the hospital.

"Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter".

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, was shot Wednesday along with several others during a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Zack Barth, a lobbyist for U.S. Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) was shot in the leg, and was in good condition.

- Gunshot wounds to the hip, like the one Scalise has, can be more complicated than they might appear, said Dr. Peter DeBlieux, the chief medical officer and an emergency medicine expert at University Medical Center in New Orleans. A former congressional aide was hospitalized.

The congressional baseball game and the women's press vs. member softball game will go on at the behest of members who don't want to let Wednesday's shooting shatter their bridge to bipartisanship. The popular annual face-off, which raises money for charity, is scheduled for Thursday evening at Nationals Park across the Potomac River in Washington, and will go forward as planned.

Slater said he would only confirm that Hodgkinson had a rifle and a handgun.

The former congresswoman from Arizona, who was a Republican but now describes herself as a moderate Democrat, underwent a long and intensive rehabilitation after a bullet went through her brain.

Hodgkinson's social media posts displayed strong anti-Trump sentiment.

While police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was too early to determine whether it was a deliberate political attack, the shooting intensified concerns about the sharp divide and bitter rhetoric in United States politics.

Brooks told CNN that during batting practice he heard a "bam" and then a quick succession of shots and saw the gunman shooting through the holes in a chain link fence. "Otherwise we would just be a bunch of guys out there on a normal morning, practicing", said Rep. DeSantis said he was in a parking lot on the first base side when he encountered the gunman. Griner was hospitalized Wednesday after she was shot in the ankle while Bailey "was treated and released having sustained a minor injury", Capitol Police said in a statement.

"My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and all the other victims, including the Capitol police, who are true and courageous professionals who put their lives on the line every day".

Someone yelled to get in the dugout - and LaVor dove for cover. "We do it for charity", Barton said. Rep. Mike Doyle, the Democratic baseball manager, touched Barton's arm at the podium to console him. No other deaths have been reported from the shooting. The man thanked him.

He was wounded in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police who were at the scene, and police said he later died.

However, the hospital later stated over Twitter that Scalise is "critically injured" and that he "remains in critical condition", following surgery.

Time and again, the stories are the same almost 10 years after his election to Congress, of Scalise staying in touch with the New Orleans area where he grew up.

After initially being trapped behind the backstop, Brooks had run over to the first-base dugout, where others had sought cover.
