USA military repositioning aircraft over Syria

Dunford said American troops "made every effort" to warn the pro-Bashar al-Assad aircraft not to come any closer to the local Syrian Democratic Force. The shootdown was near the Syrian town of Tabqa.

Russia's Defence Ministry responded by suspending cooperation with the USA aimed at avoiding air incidents over Syria, where the Russian air force is bombing in support of President Bashar al-Assad's campaigns against rebels and IS.

National Defence says it is monitoring the situation, but otherwise won't comment on where the planes have been flying in Syria and whether they are in any danger.

"We are going to continue to conduct operations throughout Syria, providing air support for coalition and partnered forces on the ground", he said. The threat posed by the government plane forced USA naval intelligence to sortie out and shoot down the belligerent aircraft.

Dillon insisted that the F-18's decision to shoot down the Su-22 bomber was in alignment with worldwide law, though the Russian Ministry of Defense called the act a "flagrant violation of global law, in addition to being actual military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic".

In a statement Monday, the Russian military also said it is suspending use of a hotline that that was set up to prevent any accidental military engagement.

And it has demanded a full account of why the USA military shot down a Syrian SU-22 on Sunday.

The Syrian Su-22 had dropped bombs on Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) troops several hours after US -led coalition buzzed over pro-government troops who had attacked SDF forces near the town of Ja'Din, near Tabqa.

The shooting down of the Syrian jet and the Russian response only proves to further entrench the United States and Russia into the continuation of a proxy war in Syria.

The Russian announcements came in response to the downing of the Syrian Air Force plane, which was the first time for the USA after it began fighting the IS in Syria, leading a coalition of worldwide forces, in 2014.

In a statement, the Syrian military described the downing of its plane as an act of "blatant aggression" on the part of the United States and accused the USA of coordinating with ISIS.

The move, the Times noted, marks "the first time the American military has downed a Syrian aircraft since the start of the civil war in 2011".

It was the first time in the six-year-old war that the United States downed a Syrian jet, sparking fears of wider escalation between opposing sides.

The United States and Russia have a standing agreement that should prevent in-the-air incidents involving us and Russia jets engaged in operations in Syria, but the Russian defense ministry is suspending the deal.

Government forces have also been attacking IS in northern, central and southern Syria, seizing 25,000 square kilometers (9,600 square miles) and reaching the Iraqi border for the first time in years.

Russian Defense Ministry said its own warplanes had been in the same space as the Syrian-U.S. strike, according to The Washington Post.

Late Sunday, the elite Revolutionary Guards launched six missiles from western Iran into Syria's mostly Islamic State group-held Deir Ezzor province, hitting an IS command base, the Guards said.
