Van Drives Into Several Pedestrians In North London; Casualties Reported

One person was killed and eight others wounded after a van struck a crowd of pedestrians near Finsbury Park Mosque.

A 48-year-old man was restrained by members of the public and then arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, according to London's Metropolitan police.

Witnesses said the incident occurred as Muslims were leaving the mosque after the traditional night prayers in Ramadan called Tarawih - observed nightly throughout the holy month.

MCB deputy head Miqdaad Versi said the incident happened "outside the Muslim Welfare House", which is on Seven Sisters Road near the mosque.

Several worshippers were in the area after attending Ramzan prayers and are believed to be among those injured, according to eyewitnesses and reports.

Earlier, he tweeted: "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight".

"My elder brother told me there is a guy driving the van and intentionally try to crush people while they were having their coffee", he said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will chair an emergency session of the security Cabinet later Monday after a van crash in London that is being investigating as possible terrorism. "The police could not confirm... if they... passed away or [had] been taken to hospital".

Another witness who lives in a flat on Seven Sisters Road said she saw people "shouting and screaming".

One man could be seen giving CPR to a victim in the street while another man's head injury was treated with a makeshift dressing. Londons transport authority said on Twitter that the Seven Sisters road had been closed due to an "emergency services incident".

The incident comes weeks after a van hit pedestrians on London Bridge and knife-wielding attackers killed eight people nearby.

"Londoners have been hit with a series of attacks and have been nothing short of heroic", she said in a statement.

The chairman of the mosque, Mohammed Kozbar, described the incident as a "cowardly attack" and said there were many injuries. Police said he was already receiving first aid when the attack unfolded.

I offer my condolences to the family and friends of the man who has died, and our thoughts are with the people who have been injured, their family and friends. I am grateful to our emergency services, who responded quickly and have been working on the scene throughout the night.

Armed counter terrorism police are at the scene.

Miqdaad Versi, the Council's assistant secretary general, said the van had deliberately swerved into a group of people who were helping a man who was ill and had fallen to the ground.
