Vehicle hits pedestrians in London, several wounded

London Metropolitan Police have responded after a vehicle reportedly hit multiple pedestrians causing

Police have said the driver was a 48-year-old man who was arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution. Authorities arrested him in connection with the incident. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and eight people were taken to three hospitals.

Commenting on reports that the van driver also produced a knife, the statement went on: "At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries".

The crash occurred near the Finsbury Park Mosque as worshippers were leaving after Ramadan prayers. It was not immediately clear why no charge had been made in relation to the one death.

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police.My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this terrible event".

Prime minister Theresa May condemned the incident and said police are treating it "as a potential terrorist attack".

- London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident "a horrific terrorist attack".

Her constituency in north London is not far from Seven Sisters Road.

"We saw lots of people shouting and lots of people injured", David Robinson, 41, who arrived just after the accident, told AFP.

One witness told The Telegraph that it appeared as though the driver of the van "lost control" of the vehicle "or something". "Our prayers are with the victims", it said.

It was unclear if multiple people were in the vehicle.

One person has been arrested following the incident on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park, BBC reported. They are continuing to investigate.

"I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight". It has not been associated with radical views for more than a decade.

Its former imam, Abu Hamza, was jailed in Britain for inciting violence and racial hatred before being extradited to NY, where he was sentenced to life in prison for terrorism in 2015. Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim.

The London Ambulance Service tweeted that it had sent "number of resources" to the site after being called in around 12.15 am.

Cynthia Vanzella said on Twitter: "Horrible to watch police officers doing cardiac massage at people on the floor, desperately trying to save them".

Helicopters buzzed overhead, and ambulances and police cars raced to the scene.

Calling on police to promptly establish the motive of the attacker or attackers, Kozbar said the perpetrator "indiscriminately attacked the people", noting that not all of them might turn out to be Muslims.

On May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.
