Vice President Pence hires outside counsel to deal with Russian Federation inquiries

Less than a month after President Trump hired a private attorney to deal with the ongoing Russian Federation probes, Vice President Mike Pence has followed suit.

Vice President Mike Pence has retained outside counsel to represent him in the special counsel's investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russians, the vice president's office confirmed Thursday. The lawyer, Richard Cullen, is a former Virginia attorney general and a former USA attorney for the eastern district of Virginia.

"At the President's direction, I'll be traveling to Central and South America later this year, to continue to build on the good work that is being done at this conference", Pence said".

To date, Pence's name hasn't come up in public testimony and news reports as someone potentially under investigation, but his interactions with former national security adviser Michael Flynn figured into the White House's explanation for Flynn's firing. Cullen also previously served as Virginia's Attorney General in the late 1990s. Paul Trible during the Iran-Contra investigation and was a member of former President George W. Bush's legal team during the 2000 Florida recount, according to his official biography.

Trump ultimately fired Flynn for misleading the vice president.

Pence had taken over the transition team from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

But obstruction came into play after Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey last month. The investigation is also looking into whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow.

He even has ties to former FBI director James Comey, who has become a central figure in the drama surrounding the special counsel investigation led by former FBI director Robert Mueller III. He ultimately resigned from the vice presidency in 1973, after pleading no contest to tax evasion.
