YouTube steps up fight against extremist, terrorist videos

Google's announcement comes four weeks after a suicide bomber killed 23 people and wounded almost 120 others after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, UK, and two weeks after a London Bridge terrorist attack killed eight people and injured almost 50 more.

"While we and others have worked for years to identify and remove content that violates our policies, the uncomfortable truth is that we, as an industry, must acknowledge that more needs to be done", he said.

Expand YouTube's Trusted Flagger program by adding 50 independent, "expert" non-governmental organizations to the 63 groups already part of it. Google will offer grants to fund the groups.

As was the case in Facebook's anti-terror plan, AI isn't front and centre because Google says "a video of a terrorist attack may be informative news reporting if broadcast by the BBC, or glorification of violence if uploaded in a different context by a different user".

Technology firms, including Google and its video site YouTube, have been accused of dragging their feet and failing to remove extremist material quickly enough.

In recent months, social media platforms have been under under pressure to do more when it comes to hosting content that promotes violent extremism and terrorist propaganda.

Throughout the post, attention is paid to the company's desire to achieve a balance between open and free societies and the prevention of terrorist actions that aim to erode these same values.

"We will be taking a tougher stance on videos that do not clearly violate our policies. videos that contain inflammatory religious or supremacist content."
It will work with Jigsaw, previously known as Google Ideas, to implement the "redirect method" more broadly across Europe.

The company will also reach potential Islamic State recruits through targeted online advertising and redirect them towards anti-terrorist videos in a bid to change their minds about joining.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Johnson said: "We are pushing back Daesh militarily, but the threat we face is evolving rather than disappearing as they lose ground in Iraq and Syria. In previous deployments of this system, potential recruits have clicked through on the ads at an unusually high rate, and watched over half a million minutes of video content that debunks terrorist recruiting messages".

Google is also working together with Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter to establish an worldwide forum to share and develop technology and support smaller companies and accelerate our joint efforts to tackle terrorism online.
