Another dual-national Greens senator Larissa Water resigns

Recently resigned Senator Larissa Waters warns her overseen-born colleagues to renounce their citizenship

Larissa Waters - another Greens senator - has also stepped down from her role in Parliament due to her dual citizenship with Canada.

Waters has been an Australian Senator since 2011 representing Queensland and was the deputy leader of the Greens.

On Tuesday, her office advised that she would make "an important announcement" at 1.30pm, using exactly the same phrasing that fellow Greens senator Scott Ludlam used ahead of his press conference last week where he announced that he was actually a dual citizen of both Australia and New Zealand, and therefore ineligible to sit in parliament.

The resignations mean the Greens have lost two of their strongest performers in Australian Parliament in less than a week.

Waters, who was born in Canada, said it was with "great shock and sadness" that she made the discovery she was still a citizen of the country she had not visited since she was 11 months old.

She did not renounce her Canadian citizenship because she was unaware she held dual citizenship.

She said Mr Ludlam's resignation on Friday encouraged her to take steps to check her own citizenship status and she received confirmation from the Canadian High Commission of her ongoing citizenship yesterday afternoon.

Waters said the law in was changed a week after she was born and that she should have renounced her Canadian citzenship. "Obviously this is something that I should have sought advice on when I first nominated for the Senate in 2007, and I take full responsibility for this grave mistake and oversight", she said.

"I just want to apologise to my party and all the wonderful Queenslanders I represented for the last six years", she said.

"I have spent my working life protecting the environment and helping the community have better say in decision making, and that will not cease".

Ms Waters was seen by some in the party, including former leader Bob Brown, as a future leader of the party.

In the case of Senator Waters, that would be former Australian Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett.

Waters said while it was "my job to check", the Greens would review their selection processes.

She's the second person from the party to resign in less than a week.
