Both versions of Runescape are coming to Android

Old School RuneScape will be the first title to make the jump to mobile this winter, with RuneScape to follow at a later date. These are full-fledged mobile clients of the existing game, not a separate version.

If you're a fan of fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online thingamabob RuneScape (and the game has 250 million registered player accounts, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that you are), you might be interested to know that you'll soon be able to play the game seamlessly between PC and mobile devices.

Jagex has announced that its renowned MMORPGs RuneScape and Old School RuneScape will be coming to mobile and tablet devices starting later this year.

Jagex thinks that this change is a monumental one, and could change the way that future MMO developers approach their games. The free-to-play title has since attracted over 250 million registered players. Jagex plans on releasing Old School RuneScape Mobile in winter 2017, and RuneScape Mobile not long afterward in 2018.

RuneScape might be old enough to drive, but it still has an active community, with thousands of players streaming on Twitch. Some people who were PC players are not now, but we can offer that same experience on a mobile device that people can dive in and out of. There is also a potential new audience that might have never played RuneScape before, much less even heard of it, and these mobile clients will be the entry point to a real, full-fledged MMORPG on mobile. While there may be question marks over how well the mobile clients are adapted to support the unique qualities of the modern-day smartphone, this is certainly a promising start to what could be a defining release for the App Store as a serious gaming platform.
