China defends imports of North Korean iron ore

By Heekyong Yang

"With its latest successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, North Korea has demonstrated intent and capability to hit the USA homeland - and as President Trump said, we must never allow this to happen", said Gardner who chairs the Senate East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Subcommittee.

The radar capable of tracking unmanned aerial vehicles from North Korea would be used for local air defense, and will enter mass production for deployment in 2018, South Korean news service Newsis reported.

USA officials are set to meet Chinese officials for a high-level economic dialogue in Washington on Wednesday according to United States officials.

European Union sanctions against North Korea date back to 2006 and are part of worldwide efforts to halt a nuclear and ballistic missile programme that experts say is meant to give Pyongyang the capability to hit the United States mainland. "We must utilize direct negotiations with Pyongyang alongside increased economic sanctions pressure from China to bring the Kim regime to the table and ultimately rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons".

"I think we recognize there is more that must be done", said Murkowski. "We are seeing progress there but a lot more has to be done", Johnson told reporters as he arrived for the talks with his counterparts. He said Chinese imports from the North fell 36.5 percent in March, 41.6 percent in April and 31.6 percent in May.

The South Korean government made a rare formal overture to its counterpart in the North on Monday, proposing that the longstanding rivals open new military talks along their shared border. He called out the "nearly 40%" increase in trade in the first three months of the year on Twitter last week. An online article in the official People's Daily this week accused the USA and Japan of using the "China responsibility theory" to hide their own failure on the Korean Peninsula. The Trump administration isn't taking military options off the table. Beijing has repeatedly criticised the installation, pointing out that the associated powerful X-band radar can be used to undermine China's nuclear deterrent against a potential U.S. attack.
