David Davis: Brexit domino effect is "a fear without foundation"

David Davis: Brexit domino effect is

One of the Bill's few surprises is its statement that the EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights will no longer apply to the United Kingdom after Brexit.

The government believes that the charter does not need to be included because it was designed only to gather together existing European Union rights, rather than create new ones, and therefore all the rights in it should be protected under the other laws covered in the bill.

The government's aim is to maximize legal continuity as Britain leaves the European Union, ensuring that wherever possible the same rules and laws apply on the day after Brexit as they did on the day before. With Conservative rebellions on aspects of the bill highly likely, May is facing possible defeat on the defining issue of her premiership.

Responding to the content of the bill leader of the SNP's Westminster group Ian Blackford MP said: "The Bill does nothing to protect the interests of Scotland and the other devolved administrations - and is final confirmation of a Westminster power grab".

The party's Brexit spokesperson, Kier Starmer, said: "Labour has always been clear that Brexit can not lead to any rolling back of rights and protections".

The Lib Dems have called for a "cast iron guarantee" of rights, while Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, swiftly called for a promise to Scotland's 173,000 European Union citizens after the referendum result. The government says it will use the new powers only to make necessary textual changes and not to change policy.

In terms of workers' rights, the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU) has confirmed that regulations derived through the Working Time Directive and the Agency Workers' Directive will continue to apply after the formal leaving date.

Several MPs used this information to demand answers about cancer treatment, including Labour's shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth.

Mr Farron said the drawn out, bitter fighting in Parliament and then the Lords could even oust Prime Minister Theresa May from Number 10, as the Repeal Bill was published today.

Starmer said he was putting May "on notice" that she must give ground on the bill.

It is unlikely that any deal on trade or other continuing links could take place without citizens' rights being agreed in advance.

In their statement, Ms Sturgeon and Mr Jones said: "This week began with the Prime Minister calling for a constructive and collaborative approach from those outside Whitehall to help get Brexit right. If you found the Article 50 bill hard, you should be under no illusion, this will be hell", said Tim Farron, the outgoing Liberal Democrat leader.

Parliament is due to go on its summer recess next week with votes on the Great Repeal Bill not due until autumn.
