The airport explained that it had been forced to close the main runway after takeoff, and then again after the aircraft returned, to ensure that there was no debris on the ground.

The Boeing 767 of the flight AC1925 has had to descend in circles in the air in order to burn off fuel before landing, Monday afternoon, reports the british newspaper Daily Mail.

A Toronto-bound flight was forced to return to London's Gatwick Airport Monday after a tire blew during takeoff.

This incident has also caused several delays in the arrivals at Gatwick airport as no plane could land until the flight of Air Canada to come back to earth.

In an update at 3.30pm, a Gatwick spokesman said a back-up runway was being used while the main runway remains shut.

"The current runway closure follows an earlier closure between 1.16pm and 1.45pm when the runway was closed for an inspection after this aircraft departed".

"We apologise as some flights will be delayed as a result and a few arriving flights are likely to be diverted to other airports".
